ELA Cadre Implementation-

During the 2018-19 school year the 4th and 5th Grade ELA Cadre implementation was able to:

  • advertise
  • recruit four classroom teachers (EVIDENCE A)
  • offer Kick-Off Training to teachers for goal setting
  • complete both school day and after school day training (EVIDENCE-NOTES B)
  • develop a leadership plan as a team (PICTURE C)
  • provide professional development during the summer (EVIDENCE D)
  • develop a website that will be utilized by all fourth and fifth grade teachers (EVIDENCE E)
  • recruit for next year's ELA Cadre (EVIDENCE F)

Future goals for this current cadre are to continue with their work of sharing best practices across the intermediate grade.

In order to build sustainability with building teacher leaders, I have advertised for a new round of ELA Cadre members (Refer to Evidence F. ) but I am currently in a waiting point to see about logistics with professional development. The number of applicants was down to three this year.

Success of Plan

With ELA Cadre I worked to first allow them to explore and learn. Second semester we have begun to shift the focus to developing a professional learning event they will instruct during the summer. Our meetings are now gathered around what will be taught and shared.

  • Adult Learning
  • Goal: Support lead teachers to become knowledgeable and confident to teach others in their area of expertise.
  • Goal: Create sustainability by allowing teachers autonomy in their learning as they teach others and become leaders.

As this was my first year of ELA Cadre and I was learning about Andragogy at the same time as offering this course, I did not do as well with laying out a plan of action and offering a concrete learning time for the lead teachers. For next year's cadre and part 2 of this cadre I will be better prepared with offering an explicit plan of action. (refer to Reflect for evidence)

Continuing Learning and Education

  • Goal: Support my district’s academic goals through the continuation of professional development that supports educators as they learn and grow towards a common goal.
  • Goal: Provide lead teachers with the necessary tools to provide professional learning opportunities to their peers.

The cadre did an excellent job with the second part of the plan when planning professional learning opportunities. I need to again be a better leader at laying down specific expectations and suggestions for professional development offerings. (refer to Reflect for evidence)

Collaborate Purposefully

  • Goal: Support regular opportunities for stakeholders of all cultures to contribute their knowledge, skills, and perspectives in a variety of ways as cadre's share their learnings with colleagues.

This was the most difficult as there were limited number of participants. As the number of cadre members grown it will be more applicable to allow for diverse stakeholders to contribute their knowledge. Currently there are not any members from title schools, schools were there are higher numbers of free or reduced lunch.

Instructional Leadership Competencies

  • Goal: Bring together diverse perspectives through the development of teacher leadership teams
  • Goal: Reflect on my own leadership skills in order to impact others to build stronger collaborative leadership groups

Overall I feel the plan was a success as a group of teachers were allowed an opportunity to learn from each other and share their learning with others. They are also given a platform to be leaders and share their leadership with others. (Evidence C)(refer to Reflect for evidence)

Changes Based on Outcomes

The largest struggle I have at this point in time is how to recruit more teachers to apply for ELA Cadre . There are some perks to being a cadre member, but it is very hard to request that teachers add one more task to an already overflowing schedule. I am currently in the process of brainstorming and reaching out to past team members, as well as stakeholders, for ideas on how to develop more of an applicant base.

The next struggle is the need to have a more focused learning protocol the first phase of the cadre and team and then phase the learning to more application towards the end of the school year. The ELA Cadre I started much too open ended with asking for a direction, rather than starting with explicit instructions. I admit I was intimidated to work with such experienced teachers and need to trust that it is ok to build a refresher section into the course before I jump right into goal setting as a group. (EVIDENCE FROM SURVEY).

Evidence A: Recruit ELA Cadre members to participate in 2018-19 school year's cadre.

Evidence B: Provide both during school and after school trainings and meeting for leadership building and collaboration opportunities. This shows design and implementation of new learning opportunities for colleagues respecting where they are in their practice.

Evidence C.: Develop a leadership plan as a team in which lead teachers are guided to make their own professional decisions through goal setting and reflection.

Evidence D.: Provide professional development during the summer to share learning which creates opportunities for lead teachers to design opportunities to share their expertise with others. Organize learning events that include teacher leaders as presenters for their instructional strengths.

Post training data to help guide future learning opportunities:

Examples from slides built by cadre members:

Evidence E.: Develop a website where ELA Cadre members can contribute ideas and resources to share with professional learning participants. This website will also be used to house notes and resources for upcoming years. Provides a collaboration tool where lead teachers can connect with colleagues based on the strengths and learnings they have gained.

Evidence F. : Recruit Cadre Members for 2019-20 School year. Working towards creating systems to foster the development of other teacher leaders. Identify and promote colleagues who would be good leaders.
