Over the summer (2021), Google released new settings that required our response. We had to configure staff and students accounts using an age based setting: who is 18+ and who is under the age of 18. This new setting allows Google to control who can access various Google services based on these two age groups. These new settings take effect around September 1, 2021.
All BPS student accounts are configured as "under the age of 18" and all BPS staff accounts are configured as "18+".
More information, like which Google services are impacted by those accounts who are under the age of 18, can be found here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10651918.

BPS enforces one of three YouTube filtering restrictions for all students called "Moderate Restricted YouTube access". This setting applies to school issued Chromebooks or the Chrome browser the student is logged into with their school account regardless of location (home or in school).
YouTube restrictions are actually based on several factors, most of which are out of our control. For example, content creators of videos can select several age level restrictions for their channel or per the video. So if the video was uploaded with the setting of "not made for kids" or the age level setting of the video was set for adults (18+), then BPS student accounts will be blocked from the video. More information about YouTube's age-restricted content filtering can be found here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2802167.
YouTube uses machine learning to detect content of videos. Using machine learning in conjunction with our student YouTube restrictions settings, YouTube may dynamically block a video at any time and without consistency. Google clearly states that "No algorithm is perfect" here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/6212415.
Parents can also implement the same YouTube restrictions at home regardless of what Google account is used. For example, if parents enable "Parental Controls" with their Xfinity Internet service, the same YouTube restrictions we enable are also enabled for all devices at home regardless if a student account is used or not.
