Smoking and Vaping are Wrong; Why do people still do it?
By Edward Morrison
With all the negative stigma over tobacco, the PSAs are blatantly attacking tobacco companies with those grizzly visuals. I think every American has learned about how bad smoking is. Even with all that, according to the CDC, About ⅛ of the US population smokes. How?
I think smoking is bad. Hundreds of thousands die every year from smoking-related deaths. I think it is terrible but easily preventable. It is proven that smoking can cause lung cancer, heart disease, COPD, and pregnancy complications. These are all terrible diseases, and these can end lives early.
I think the reason why smoking is still prevalent is that tobacco companies haven't had to do much to defend themselves or even advertise.
Pop culture has glorified smoking and vaping and has made smoking remarkable. Vaping has become more popular among younger smokers with all the enticing flavors, and I think this advertising is just plain dangerous and harmful.
You can't tell Hollywood what to do, and that vaping company can use whatever flavor they want.
Although I don't support censorship so that the Hollywood claim can go, fortunately, Hollywood is trying to quit smoking. The claim that vaping companies can use whatever flavor they want is garbage. With flavors like mint, mango, and fruit, you know you will get children into it.
Overall, the smoking situation might not go away soon. Vaping might stay a high school bathroom favorite for a very long time.
If we push stricter legislation to make these kid flavors disappear, then who knows, maybe even vaping will go the way of the dinosaur.
It's Okay to Say No to Vaping
By Davina Separzadeh
Vaping is not suitable for your body, especially at a young age. Vaping at a young age will damage the body parts in your brain. Vaping will cause mood changes, damage your brain, and cause a loss of self-control.
Vaping will give you mood changes and make you feel angry. Vaping could cause depression. Mood swings aren't healthy. If you are mad during school, you will not be able to educate yourself fully, and you cannot learn.
Vaping would damage your brain. The effects of brain damage are losing brain cells, and you would hurt your lungs. When you lose brain cells from vaping, you won't be as intelligent as before. Injuring your lungs could damage your breathing, and you would die sooner than you should.
Others might say it's okay to try it once because "one time won't hurt." If you try it out and enjoy it, you will get addicted and won't stop vaping. This would lead to all of the bad things the article stated before. Addiction isn't good.
Hopefully, after reading this article about how vaping isn't good for you, you will stop or won't try vaping. Don't get addicted.
The Abomination Known as Vaping
By Adam Lugassi
Vaping is a growing threat to the people and kids of the modern world, affecting their lives in dangerous ways. Vaping can change someone's life in numerous ways, from their actions, feelings, and thoughts, to their lungs and body.
Vaping can affect you with its chemicals, addiction, and the damage it causes to your lungs, mind, and body.
The things that make vaping so deadly its is chemicals. These vapes contain nicotine, diacetyl, tin, nickel, lead, and about 2000 chemicals. Once these chemicals enter your lungs, they can damage them in various ways in a short period, progressing as you do it more. The most potent weapon of a vape is its addiction. Once you start taking it, it will feel impossible to stop, and you always want more. The more your brain gets used to it, the more the brain will think you need it. Studies say that nicotine is so addicting in vapes that it is even as addicting as the most vital drugs, like heroin and cocaine.
People may say that they need it cause it helps them relax and forget about their struggles, but vaping does the opposite. Addiction can cause things like stress, anxiety, and even depression.
People who aid and protect vaping are hurting themselves more than those trying to help them. Vaping causes many atrocities to your body that continue growing and growing to maybe even a point of no return. Some side effects are shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal pain, nausea, and even damage to the growing brain of somebody under 25.
Overall, The chemicals, addiction, and damage from vaping show how horrible it truly is. It is not too late for people to end their vaping habits and heal themselves. Once they do, they will feel much better and be grateful they recovered.
Say No to Trick-or-Treating This Year
By Davina Separzadeh
Should kids be going trick or treating because of fentanyl this year? I honestly think it would be safer not to go. Parents should buy some candy, hide it in different places around the house, and the kids go find it.
Fentanyl is something very risky, and even the size of a salt grain could kill you immediately. a piece of candy is not worth your life. 150 people every day had died from overdosing on fentanyl. After consuming 2 milligrams of fentanyl, you would pass out and die.
I wouldn't want my child to die over a tiny candy. Parents should buy kids candy to keep their children safe. In conclusion, I wouldn't go trick or treating this year.
Taking Notes on Paper is so old fashioned
By Wolf Nazari
In schools worldwide, students do a lot of work and take a lot of notes on paper, but writing letters on paper should be a thing of the past, and doing and taking notes online should be in the now. Educators should assign work online for three reasons: taking notes on paper contributes to a lot of global warming, papers can get lost quickly, and you always have to have a writing utensil to work.
Taking notes on paper contributes to a lot of global warming. 80% of paper ends up in landfills, equating to about 750 tons. Pens are also considered toxic materials and have to be disposed of properly. Because of this evidence, we can see that the form and the cells we use to take notes by hand are horrible for our environment.
Papers can get lost very easily. When we get pieces, they are very easily lost or, at first glance, seem like trash, so they get thrown away. When we take notes on, for example, Google docs, we can access these notes from anywhere on any device. Also, Google Drive provides 15Gb of free cloud storage.
One problem with this statement is that it is for more than just online work. Since you always have to have a writing utensil and paper to work on printouts. Pencils and pens are also easily lost or thrown away because they are so small. According to Green America, 1.6 billion pencils are thrown away each year.
Overall, As much as teachers love to tell us that we have to write our notes on paper because we will retain them better, I disagree. I understand that we may be able to maintain our notes better by writing them out on paper, but the amount of waste that goes into that little bit is not worth it. My aim for this editorial is to show teachers that the belief that is writing notes on paper is outdated.
Kids Need to Step up with Their Behavior toward Adults
By Davina Separzadeh
Kids disrespect adults such as teachers, parents, and house cleaners more frequently now than before. Some parents should have better parenting, so kids don't act that way toward other adults.
One issue is that kids are acting up in class, disrupting the teachers and students. Some kids yell out, others talk over the teachers, and some are rude. Students should have more respect toward teachers because they don't get paid enough, work hard for us to learn, and try to encourage us to do our best.
Another issue is that kids are rude to their house cleaners. For example, they throw clothes on the ground while the house cleaner cleans. This is highly disrespectful because they are putting their time and effort into cleaning our homes. Kids need to show them the respect they deserve.
The final issue is that kids are disrespectful to their parents. They start acting rude to their parents if they can't get whatever they want. Parents must stop spoiling their kids, set boundaries, and model good behavior.
School Should Start Later
By Sterling Fredrickson
The grating buzzing drags me from a deep sleep. I try to move, but my body fails me. It's as if my brain knows I have to wake up, but the rest refuses. This is the worst time of the school day: morning. At least I'm not the only one who dreads the early start. Many kids complain about how little sleep they get or how early school starts. School starting too early is a big problem because it means less sleep, which is crucial, especially for middle school kids. It is recommended kids get at least 9-10 hours of sleep each night which can be hard to get when school starts at the crack of dawn.
"The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that children aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours and teenagers aged 13–18 years should sleep 8–10 hours per 24 hours." (cdc.gov). This shows that middle schoolers, usually ages 11-13, need lots of sleep.
"Biology plays a large factor in the sleep cycles of children and adolescents. At the beginning of puberty, most adolescents experience later sleep onset and wake times, also called "phase delay." This phase delay can shift the body's internal clock back up to two hours. As a result, the average teenager cannot fall asleep until 11:00 pm and would do best waking up at 8:00 am or even later" (sleepfoundation.org). This shows that, on average, teenagers fall asleep at 11 pm and should at least sleep until 8 am. This is an issue because school starts at 8 am, so it is nearly impossible to get enough sleep.
Lack of sleep can cause serious problems. According to cdc.gov, "Children and adolescents who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, injuries, poor mental health, and problems with attention and behavior." This is important because all of the problems lack of sleep can cause harmful and essential things.
In conclusion, middle schoolers need 9-10 hours of sleep, but the early start of school makes that difficult to achieve. If you don't get enough sleep, you have a higher chance of obesity, diabetes, and poor mental health. These are all very important and are all why school should start later.
Violent Video Games do not Lead to Violence
By Jonah Shirazi
Violent video games don't usually cause violence for kids in the real world; however, this might cause kids to be violent depending on how bad and damaging the game is. An example is Fortnite is not violent compared to games including GTA and Call of Duty. Video games can cause violence to kids, whether the game has blood or is more realistic. Fortnite is more like a game that is animated and not like the real world.
Video games don't usually cause violence; they typically don't cause kids to be violent because it doesn't affect them in their real lives. However, Video games could cause violence depending on the game. Ex: GTA is a game almost 100% realistic to the real world and may cause violence.
Video games help kids with dyslexia because they have trouble reading. When they play video games, they have to pay attention to what they're playing to win. Ex: As they read, they pay attention to the words in the book, which helps kids with dyslexia read better.
People might argue that video games do not help kids with dyslexia. It just makes it worse, and it makes them violent. Who would want their kids to play violent video games to help them with dyslexia?
However, I'm afraid I disagree with this statement because video games help kids focus passionately. Kids do not have to play violent video games, and it could almost be any requiring a competition. These video games need to have a match, so they are focused on needing to win.
Overall, Video games are good for you because how it helps kids with dyslexia read better and make kids more physical because mobile games require physical games on their electronic devices.
Books Are Still Better than TV
By Miah Jackson
Some kids prefer to watch the movie and not read the Book. Which do you choose? The Book is better because sometimes the movie is different from the book and the Book is different. According to vowelor.com, books open up your imagination. While just binge-watching on the sofa, you can't imagine anything because you can see everything on the screen. Another reason books are better is that every book is unique for each reader. When people watch movies, there is the same for every viewer, which is pretty lame. When you read books, you get a different perspective from everyone else. Not everyone thinks alike, so you learn the same knowledge when you watch a movie. People might argue that you can get a different perspective when you watch a movie.
Also, let's say you lose connection or the internet in your house. Television is just an electronic box of junk without energy, but books are always available. They will take you places in your imagination that television can not.
We Need a Break from Our Phones
By Miah Jackson
Phones? Phones don't belong everywhere, Right? Well, today, phones are everyone's lifestyle. According to https://techjury.net, most people spend 5.4 hours using their phones and check them up to 63 times daily.
Some places where phones should not belong are at the movies. There is already a screen in front of you; by now, people should know phones should be off or on silent and put away.
The next place phones don't belong is in the restrooms. That's just disgusting, but there is plenty of reasons why phones shouldn't be entered into the bathrooms. The first reason is it could drop right into the toilet. Yuck! You would be wanted to get that out, Especially if it's a public bathroom. You would like to be in that award situation.
Another area where your phone should not be allowed is where you pray about your religion, including Jewish, Christan, Muslim, Islamic, and many others.
The dining table is the last place where most people don't allow phones. (I could admit I do) But you shouldn't, Bringing your phone to the dining table is considered Rude. This is where you should talk to your family. About anything which includes, How was school?
Lastly, your phone doesn't belong in the class. But that's an article for a different time. Overall be respectful when you take your phone because not all places allow phones, and use them where you think they belong.
