Interview with Dr. Eason
By Aidan Zahabian and Solon Jones
Mr. Eason is the new social studies teacher for 7th and 8th Grade at BVMS.
How do you like the new school compared to the old one?
It's different, but it’s different in a good way. I like how much energy everyone has at BV. It’s a great community.
Is switching from college to middle school kids in one big jump hard?
It wasn’t one big jump. I taught High school in the middle and middle school before college.
As the new teacher at school, do you feel that people take advantage of you?
Sure. It's inevitable.
Rank the following three for which is easier to teach: 7th grade, 8th grade, high school, and college kids.
That's a surprisingly challenging question. It’s probably easier to teach college kids or high school kids because they have more of a drive to get a good grade and graduate.
Is meeting new friends at this school as the new teacher in town hard?
Not really. It is an arm community and that goes for the staff and the students.
How did you end up in Middle school instead of college?
I’m from California and I enjoy it.
How did you end up in Beverly Hills?
I started over helping independent study students up in the high school. There was an open opportunity in the middle school and I was really lucky to get it. I am also very happy to be back in a classroom where I belong.
How do you have time to plan lessons for 7th-grade regular classes, 8th-grade regular classes, and 8th-grade honors classes?
I never sleep. No, I'm kidding. It's a challenge to prep and that’s why I’m fortunate to have Ms. Crawford and Ms. Long who provide me with lesson plans for my 8th grade classes.
Do you think your students are prepared for the final exam that you are giving out?
I think some of them are and some of them aren’t, and I hope all my students study but sometimes it is okay to do not as well as you want to do in life.”
What are some hobbies that you do outside of school?
“Exercising, spending lots of time with my dog, my family, and some gaming too.
Do you have a family… if so who is in it?
My dog at home. Part of my reason for coming back to California was to be closer to family. My parents are pretty close by, my cousins, aunts, and uncles, are all in the area. I have one brother and he lives in Japan. Don’t see him as often as I would like to but I talk to him.
Where did you grow up?
I grew a little bit up the coast of Ventura County.

Unlocking the Potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
By Beaudy Sipser
Air travel is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to connect people and places worldwide. However, it also comes with a high environmental cost. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), aviation is responsible for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and this share is expected to grow as demand for air travel increases.
To reduce the impact of aviation on climate change, the industry has set ambitious goals to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. One of the critical solutions to reach this target is to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a low-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel.
What is SAF, and how is it made?
SAF is a type of biofuel, meaning it is made from plant or animal materials rather than fossil fuels. SAF can be produced from various feedstocks, such as used cooking oil, animal waste fat, agricultural and forestry residues, municipal solid waste, algae, and dedicated energy crops. These feedstocks are converted into liquid fuel using different technologies, such as hydroprocessing, gasification, pyrolysis, and fermentation. SAF has properties and performance similar to conventional jet fuel and can be used as a "drop-in" replacement without requiring any aircraft engine or fuel system modifications. However, SAF must still be blended with conventional jet fuel, with limits ranging from 10% to 50%, depending on the feedstock and the production process. The aim is to increase the blending ratio to 100% by 2030.
How does SAF reduce emissions?
SAF can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel, depending on the feedstock and the production process. This is because SAF uses renewable and waste resources that can either absorb CO2 from the atmosphere during their growth or avoid emissions from their disposal. For example, using SAF made from used cooking oil can avoid emissions from landfilling or incinerating the oil and displacing emissions from fossil fuels. SAF can also reduce other pollutants, such as sulfur, nitrogen, and particulate matter, which can negatively affect human health and the environment. Moreover, SAF can improve aircraft performance, as it has a higher energy density and lower freezing point than conventional jet fuel.
What are the benefits and challenges of SAF?
Using SAF can bring multiple benefits to the aviation industry and society, such as:
• Reducing GHG emissions and helping the industry achieve its climate goals
• Creating new economic opportunities and jobs in the biofuel sector and the rural areas
• Enhancing energy security and diversifying the fuel supply
• Improving public health and air quality
• Increasing public acceptance and aviation trust.
However, there are also some challenges and barriers that need to be overcome, such as:
• Increasing the availability and affordability of SAF, as it is currently more expensive and less abundant than conventional jet fuel
• Ensuring the sustainability and certification of SAF, as it has to meet strict environmental and social criteria
• Scaling up the production and distribution of SAF, as it requires significant investments and infrastructure
• Raising awareness and collaboration among stakeholders, such as governments, airlines, fuel producers, and consumers.
How can we support the development and deployment of SAF?
To accelerate the transition to SAF, the aviation industry needs the support and cooperation of various stakeholders, such as:
• Governments that can provide policy frameworks and incentives to stimulate the demand and supply of SAF, such as mandates, subsidies, taxes, credits, and standards
• Airlines who can commit to using SAF and purchase it at a premium price, as well as invest in research and development of new technologies and feedstocks
• Fuel producers, who can innovate and scale up the production and distribution of SAF, as well as ensure its quality and sustainability
• Consumers can fly with airlines that use SAF, pay a voluntary surcharge, and reduce their overall travel emissions.
SAF is a promising solution to reduce aviation's environmental impact and make flying more sustainable. By working together, we can make SAF a reality and a success.

The Problem with Fast Fashion
By Philip Lee
In the age of the Internet, everything is fast. Culture goes with the wind, style with the tides, and patience like it was never there. The Internet is immutable in this way, getting faster and faster with every step into the future. Before TikTok, long-form entertainment dominated the internet with the help of YouTube. In the YouTube era, videos were typically around the ten-minute mark. However, a typical TikTok video is measured in seconds in the TikTok era. The speed of the internet has affected all walks of life, especially fashion.
Historically, people used to own a few clothes over their entire lifetime. They would mend their clothes if they tore, ripped, or were disheveled. Generally, even a few dozen years ago, a fashion style could be summed into an entire decade.
What is the problem with fashion moving quickly? It is a natural evolution of humanity as a species. There are many factors, but there are two main factors, even arguably one.
First, the ability to mend clothes is critical because we throw away clothes regularly, and mending has become rare. However, this is a nonissue as we do not need to mend clothes we never wear again, and some artisans can mend clothes.
Second, but more importantly, the choice of materials makes a difference. We use synthetic, cellulose, and natural fibers for our clothing. The one we need to think about is the synthetic fibers. Synthetic fibers, according to Textile Beat, "polyester, acrylic, and nylon – are derived from petroleum and are a type of plastic ."What is the problem with synthetic fibers, and more specifically, plastic? CNN says, "These fossil fuels are refined in facilities, using extreme temperatures and a significant amount of water and energy, where they are transformed into pellets that are eventually melted and molded into water bottles, packaging, garbage bags, and clothes." Just making these clothes is hugely resource-intensive and incredibly wasteful.
Nevertheless, that is not all, folks! There is even more to the environmental damage here. CNN says that plastics do not break down once thrown into nature. Moreover, alarmingly, only around 9% of plastic in the United States is recycled, "according to the Environmental Protection Agency — even the stuff you specifically threw into the recycle bin." Plastics, being not biodegradable and all that, are incredibly harmful to the environment. Have you ever heard of the North Atlantic garbage patch? Without another statistic, it is difficult to state how harmful this is to our Earth. According to Textile Beat, for every three natural-fibered clothes that are made, seven synthetic-fibered clothes are made. That factoid on its own is not bad, but pairing it with the fact that so many of these clothes are thrown away, it becomes a problem. A large problem.
What can we do to help solve this problem? We can start by buying clothes that are made from natural fibers. Nevertheless, for some people, that is more challenging. There is a reason why synthetics are so popular: It is cheap, easy, and fast. Natural materials, on the other hand, are more expensive than synthetics. So, for people who can not afford to buy exclusively natural clothes, try to get more mileage out of your clothes. Think twice before buying another pair, and try to cut out as many synthetic clothes as possible. Please, if synthetics are already part of your wardrobe, do not throw them out.
The Devastating Impact of the Closed Interstate 10 in Los Angeles
By Beaudy Sipser
Closing a major freeway in downtown Los Angeles due to a fire has caused considerable disruption and inconvenience for thousands of commuters, residents, and businesses. The 10 Freeway, which connects the city with the east and west coasts, has been shut down in both directions since Saturday morning when a fire erupted at two storage yards underneath the freeway. The fire damaged the freeway's structure and safety, and authorities have not yet determined when it will reopen.
The 10 Freeway is one of the country's busiest and most important highways, carrying about 300,000 vehicles per day. It is also a vital link for the transportation of goods, services, emergency, and public services. The freeway closure has created a traffic nightmare for drivers, who must find alternative routes or modes of transportation. Many drivers have reported spending hours on the road, facing long delays and detours. Some drivers have opted to use public transit, such as buses, trains, or subways, but these options are also crowded and limited. Others have decided to work from home, cancel their plans, or avoid the area altogether.
The closure of the 10 Freeway has also affected the local economy and quality of life. Businesses in the area have reported a loss of customers, revenue, and productivity, as well as increased costs and difficulties in delivering their goods and services. Residents in the area have experienced increased noise, pollution, and stress and reduced access to essential services, such as health care, education, and recreation. The closure of the freeway has also raised concerns about the safety and security of the area, as well as the potential for accidents, fires, or crimes.
The state and local authorities have declared a state of emergency and have mobilized their resources and efforts to deal with the situation. They have deployed engineers, firefighters, police officers, and other personnel to assess the damage, clear the debris, and restore the freeway. They have also announced detours and transit alternatives and have urged the public to cooperate and be patient. However, they still need to provide a clear timeline or estimate for when the freeway will reopen and they have warned that the closure could last for days or weeks.
The fire that caused the closure of the 10 Freeway is still under investigation, and the exact cause and origin of the fire are not yet known. However, some sources have suggested that a homeless encampment, faulty electrical wiring, or a discarded cigarette may have started the fire. The fire has also raised questions about the regulation and inspection of the storage yards, which contained flammable materials, such as pallets, tires, and plastics. The fire has also highlighted the vulnerability and fragility of the aging freeway infrastructure, which needs maintenance and improvement.
The closure of the 10 Freeway is one of the worst transportation disasters in the history of Los Angeles. It has exposed the city's mobility and urban planning challenges and limitations. The freeway closure has also shown the importance and interdependence of the freeway system and the need for more investment and innovation in the transportation sector. The freeway closure has also demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of the city and its people, who have faced the situation with courage and creativity.

In-feed ads can last 5 to 60 seconds and include a call-to-action button, such as download, shop, or learn more. In-feed ads are similar to Instagram Stories or Snapchat ads, and users can skip them.
• TopView ads: These are video ads that appear when the user opens the app before they see the For You page. TopView ads can last up to 60 seconds and include sound, voice, and music. TopView ads are similar to YouTube ads, and they can capture the user's attention at the first impression.
• Brand takeover ads: These are full-screen video or image ads that appear when the user opens the app or switches between categories. Brand takeover ads can last up to 5 seconds and include a link to a landing page or a hashtag challenge. Brand takeover ads are exclusive to one category per day and can reach a massive audience quickly.
• Branded hashtag challenge ads: These ads invite users to participate in a user-generated content campaign, creating and sharing videos using a branded hashtag. Branded hashtag challenge ads appear on the Discover page, where users explore trending topics and hashtags. Branded hashtag challenge ads can last up to 6 days, including a custom banner, landing page, and influencer partnership. Branded hashtag challenge ads are one of the most engaging and viral types of TikTok ads, as they can generate millions of views, likes, comments, and shares.
• Branded effects ads: These ads allow users to use branded stickers, filters, or lenses in their videos. Branded effects ads appear in the TikTok camera, where users can choose from various creative effects. Branded effects ads can last up to 10 days and include 2D, 3D, or AR effects. Branded effects ads are one of the most fun and interactive TikTok ads, as they can enhance the user's experience and expression.
Benefits and Challenges of TikTok Ads
TikTok ads have many benefits for advertisers.
• Access to a large and diverse audience: TikTok has over 1 billion monthly active users from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. TikTok users are also mostly young, with 60% being between 16 and 24 years old. TikTok ads can help advertisers reach and connect with this vast and influential market segment, which is often hard to reach through other channels.
• High engagement and retention rates: TikTok users are highly engaged and loyal to the platform, as they spend an average of 52 minutes daily on the app and open it eight times daily. TikTok users are also more likely to interact with ads, with a 9% higher click-through rate than other social media platforms. TikTok ads can help advertisers increase their brand awareness, loyalty, and conversions by creating engaging and relevant content for the users.
• Low cost and high return on investment: TikTok ads are relatively affordable and flexible, with a minimum budget of $50 per campaign and $20 per ad group. TikTok ads also have a high return on investment, as they have a 20% lower cost per impression and a 24% lower cost per click than other social media platforms. TikTok ads can help advertisers optimize their budget and performance by using data and analytics to measure and improve their results.
TikTok ads also have some challenges for advertisers, such as:
• High competition and saturation: TikTok is a highly competitive and saturated platform, with millions of content creators and advertisers competing for the user's attention and interest. TikTok ads can be hard to stand out and differentiate, as they have to compete with the organic and viral content on the platform. TikTok ads also have to comply with the platform's policies and guidelines, which can limit the creative freedom and expression of the advertisers.
• Short attention span and low conversion rate: TikTok users have a short attention span and a low tolerance for interruption, as they are used to consuming fast and entertaining content on the platform. The user can easily skip or ignore TikTok ads, as they must capture the user's attention and interest in the first few seconds. TikTok ads also have a low conversion rate, as they have to persuade the user to take action, such as clicking, downloading, or buying, which can be challenging on a platform mainly used for entertainment and socialization.
Best Practices and Tips for Creating Effective TikTok Ads
To create effective TikTok ads, advertisers should follow some best practices and tips, such as:
• Know your audience and goal: Advertisers should have a clear understanding of who their target audience is, what their needs and preferences are, and what their goal is. Advertisers should also choose the correct ad format and option that suits their audience and goal and matches the user's behavior and expectations on the platform.
• Be authentic and original: Advertisers should create authentic and original ads that reflect their brand personality and voice and resonate with their audience. Advertisers should also avoid using stock images, videos, or music, as they can look generic and boring, and instead use their own or user-generated content to look more natural and appealing.
• Be creative and entertaining: Advertisers should create ads that are creative and entertaining, that capture the user's attention and interest and that make the user want to watch, like, comment, or share. Advertisers should also use humor, emotion, storytelling, or challenges, as they can make the ads more engaging and memorable.
• Be relevant and timely: Advertisers should create relevant and timely ads that relate to the user's needs and wants and align with current trends and events. Advertisers should also use hashtags, keywords, or influencers, as they can make the ads more discoverable and credible.
• Be clear and concise: Advertisers should create clear and concise ads that deliver their message and value proposition and include a call to action. Advertisers should also keep their ads short and straightforward, as they have limited time and space to communicate with the user.
Conclusion
TikTok is a social media app that allows users to create and share short videos, often with music, filters, and effects. TikTok is also a powerful marketing tool for businesses that want to reach and engage with a large and diverse audience, especially the younger generation. TikTok offers advertisers various ad formats and options, depending on their goals, budget, and target audience. TikTok ads have many benefits, such as access to a large and diverse audience, high engagement and retention rates, low cost, and a high return on investment. However, TikTok ads have challenges, such as high competition and saturation, a short attention span and low conversion rate, and compliance with the platform's policies and guidelines. Advertisers should follow some best practices and tips to create effective TikTok ads, such as knowing their audience and goal, being authentic and original, being creative and entertaining, being relevant and timely, and being clear and concise.
