Listen Up Incoming 8th Graders
By Miah Jackson
If you are an incoming 8th grader, please pay attention. For some of you, the eighth grade might be difficult since you will have a lot of reading and writing. Here are some of the things you should know for next year:
Learn to work independently. This year I was not in the same academic classes as my friends, so I could not ask them for help when I needed it.
Find an adult who can help you, especially if you struggle academically or socially.
Do not feel tempted to vape. This year people vaped a lot, and every time you entered the bathroom, it smelled fruity, like someone sprayed perfume. Sometimes people got caught in there while others vaped on the bathroom floor. If you ever smell something fruity or something weird, I would recommend returning to your teacher and telling them what has happened.
Get a locker so you do not hurt your back with your heavy backpack. This is because, in eighth grade, you may have more books to carry than in seventh grade.
Work on study skills. This is because, unlike other grades, there are more tests and quizzes. If you need to find better study habits, Google is your friend.
Lastly, ask many questions. I did not do that, and I feel like it would have helped a lot if I did. This is important because it helps with your critical thinking and helps you make better decisions.
Good luck in eighth grade.
Teacher Appreciation Week
Time to Show Some Love
By Miah Jackson
Teacher's Appreciation Week starts on May 1st and ends on May 4th. This event is held throughout the United States to honor and appreciate teachers by recognizing their contributions to education and society.
You may be wondering what to reward the teachers with. The first thing you can buy is a gift card with any amount you can afford. Another thing you can gift is school supplies. By the end of the year, many teachers have run out of supplies, so receiving some will help them greatly.
Other less expensive options include making a custom door sign, including their name, room number, and what they teach. Another simple gift is a candle. All you have to do is choose a scent.
The last few things you can get for them are a journal that you can also pair with pens, a tea gift set: Honey sticks, a Nice tea cup, leaf tea, and tea bags. To finish off, get them a cozy blanket, potted plants, lotions or soaps, or baked goods for a little twist.
Tips for Incoming Middle Schoolers
By Isabella Miller
Middle school is a significant change from elementary school. You must attend six classes a day instead of staying in one class. The positive side of that change is that you can make more friends. Middle schoolers have more tests that they keep having to study, and you will not necessarily get more homework but lots of tests!
Find the right Friends.
Finding the right friends is so important in middle school. If a friend ever stabs you in the back, it will potentially ruin your school experience and sometimes even your grades. You want friends that will not use you for homework answers or do not always get you in trouble. Once I became a middle schooler, I learned it does not matter how many friends you have; real friends are priceless. You want friends who will stick up for you and bring you up, not down. Not many people understand the concept of friends; everybody needs at least one friend they can trust. Having friends does not mean you have to tell them every secret you have, and you should not say to your friends all your secrets.
Be Respectful to your Teachers.
Only a few kids know this trick, but being respectful to your teachers can help you, and here is why. If you have a 88% percent in the class, the teachers you are friendly and respectful with might round your grade up to an "A." Kids should always respect their elders and mostly their teachers; teachers do a lot for us. When teachers start liking you, they do a lot for you. And if you do something terrible, the teacher will most likely avoid getting you in trouble.
Study, Study, Study!
Studying is something that everybody needs to do to make sure they keep good learning habits for the future. Even if you think you know everything, it is always better to skim through your work and double-check, or it is just good to study for the future so you are used to learning and know how to. After you study, you will see the results you will get from that obstacle. You always need to do your best in any grade you are in. Getting good grades and doing your best always gets you where you want to be. Middle school is a significant change from elementary school.
