How Bullying Can Hurt People
By Isabella Miller
Bullying is such a big issue in schools everywhere. Bullying can lead to severe issues like suicide, depression, and mental health problems. Many people who have not been bullied say things like "That is just life" and "You need to toughen up" until someone they know gets bullied. There are different ways you can be bullied, like cyberbullying, which is online bullying, verbal and physical bullying. School is supposed to be a safe place, but when you get bullied, it brings you a lot of fear.
Quotes about cyberbullying
1. "If you insult people on the Internet, you must be ugly on the inside."
2. “Cyberbullying is bullying. Hiding behind a pretty screen does not make it any less hateful."
3. "Unless and until our society recognizes cyberbullying for what it is, the suffering of thousands of silent victims will continue."
4. "Cyber bullies can hide behind a mask of anonymity online and do not need direct physical access to their victims to do unimaginable harm."
5. "Not all forms of abuse leave bruises."-
What victims of bullying can experience.
Victims of bullying can experience so many traumatic things. Many people think that bullying is just the way of life, but being harassed, hit, or stabbed in the back every day is not fun. That is why we need more people to stand up to bullying. They can experience fear, depression, loneliness, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Schools try to stop bullying, but they are not trying hard enough. Many articles and news stories have shown how kids have committed suicide due to bullying. Kids do not realize their actions are wrong until it is too late. Some kids have been so hurt by their bullies that they choose suicide as an alternative to their pain, which should never be an option! Kids need to know that taking their own life is never an option and nothing should be so bad that they would think it would be better than living an entire life.
How to prevent bullying
Every parent should talk about bullying and teach their kids how to deal with it. You can tell your kids many things so that bullying will be less of a significant problem in the future. Tell your kids always to find a trusted adult that can help them during rough times. You should always check in on your kids after school to ensure you can build trust with them. You can ask questions like '"How was school? How was the bus ride home from school? What is lunchtime like at your school? Who do you sit with? What do you talk about?" Kids pick up on what they see their parents do. If your child notices you are being very kind and helping out people, they would most likely do the same thing.
How parents, teachers, and kids can take action to prevent bullying
Teachers and parents know that bullying is significant, and I am sure all schools are trying to stop it. Schools should come up with better consequences. Schools should clarify that getting help from an adult is not squealing and only for their best. If a teacher notices that a kid is getting bullied or words are being said, schools should immediately take charge, record the incident and send it to the school administration. They can meet with the victim and perpetrator's parents. The school should involve the parents because kids sometimes feel uncomfortable telling their parents about their social issues.
What should schools do if it is hard for a kid to find friends?
For students who have a hard time finding friends from a new school or just in general can not find friends, teachers and administrators should take it upon themselves and set up activities to do during lunch or break, even just making a friendly club where you can find friends or give them "work" that students can do during lunch or holidays. Watch out for signs your child is being bullied. Children do not always talk out loud about being bullied. Symptoms include loss of appetite, reluctance to go to school, depression, anxiety, and crying. If you see your child being bullied, do not say 'Leave it alone' or 'Stop.' Instead, you can chat and start a conversation about what is going on during school, in the bathrooms, or even on the bus and try to deal with what is going on to fix the situation.

Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior
Persevering through Injury
By Emma Saeedian
Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, commonly known as Neymar, is a famous soccer player that has played for many clubs but currently plays for Paris Saint Germain and Brazil. His widely known career was plagued by injuries that required time off from the field. Neymar has been affected by many injuries with varying severities but continued with a better comeback than he had for each one before.
Back Injury
Among his series of events throughout his career, one of the first setbacks was a lower back injury involving vertebrae in his back obtained during a match against Colombia in the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals. During the play that caused the damage, Juan Camilo Zúñiga's knee collided with his back, fracturing vertebrae in his lower back. "'He was crying out in pain,'" Scolari said of Neymar. "'It won't be easy for him to recover, based on what the doctor told us and the pain he's in'" (Keh). After Brazil's 2-0 win, they went on to play what could arguably be the most one-sided game against Germany, resulting in a score of 7-1 to Germany.
Recovery
Neymar was told to be out for about three to four weeks during his recovery. Soon after he obtained his injury, he said to a Bleacher Report reporter that he "could be in a wheelchair" right now if Zuniga's knee went two centimeters to the left. In an interview with Players Tribune, Neymar painted the picture of how much more severe his injury could have been. "I have experienced many moments that haven't been good," Neymar said about his World Cup career. "But it's about the injury. The injury was my worst moment because of my week there. I just cried at home; I would see my mom, my dad, crying -- everyone sad, my friends, family, and this, to me, has been the worst moment." (Skiver) Then says that he wanted to continue to play, as he wanted to score. He says, "But I could not manage to lift my legs,"' he explained. '"I could not move my legs. And the doctor took me out, and I started to cry. Because it was very painful and I didn't feel anything. I didn't feel my legs, so I went to the hospital that's in the stadium" (Skiver). A month after he obtained the injury, he reported that his recovery was making progress, and on August 18, 2014, he was cleared to play for Barcelona in their next game.
2018 Ankle Injury
In 2018, Neymar "put on a show" after Mexico player Miguel Layun stepped on his ankle by accident. Neymar's reaction was mocked by many all over social media platforms. "His ankle was as if there were invisible crocodiles surrounding the edge of the pitch," BBC-5 teased. His reaction certainly raised eyebrows and turned heads as he rolled around on the ground, flailing his arms and screaming in agony. However, this attention was short-lived, but the teasing will be forever. Many on Twitter were saying things along the lines of, "Someone gets Neymar an Oscar already!"
2018 Metatarsal
In 2018, PSG confirmed that Neymar did have a fractured metatarsal and a sprained ankle, both obtained during a win against Marseille. "Neymar was taken off on a stretcher during the 3-0 win at Parc des Princes, and the club said that a scan has revealed a "fissure of the fifth metatarsal" – a bone on the outside of the foot – and a "sprain of the right ankle." The French club did not say how long the forward will be out for, but the expected time for recovery and recuperation from a metatarsal injury is between two and three months." (The Guardian 2018). This injury threatened him to continue to play in the 2018 World Cup. "The preliminary X-ray did not show any broken bones, but PSG stated further inspection with an ultrasound and computed tomography scan discovered a crack in a bone in his foot, sprained ankle, and a grade 1 muscle injury in his quadricep." (Ring 2018) The Brazil team and PSG decided on surgery for the metatarsal- the long bone in the foot connecting the foot with the toe. His recovery was an estimated two to three months before playing again.
2020 Adductor Injury
An adductor is a muscle in the inner- thigh that is very important to soccer players' ability to play. This muscle affects how you run, kick, turn, jump, and much more than many think. The strain on this muscle can put players out for varying times, depending on the severity of the tear, strain, or injury to the muscle. For Neymar, he obtained this injury during the 1-0 match with Coupe de France victory at SM Caen.
"Neymar JR suffered a lesion to the left adductor on Wednesday evening. After analysis of clinical exams and scans, it is expected that he'll be out for around four weeks depending on the evolution of the injury" (Johnson). Neymar has been criticized for getting hurt so often, but more than half of these injuries have been obtained on the field or during matches. However, even then, it is essential that despite the backlash, athletes take injury leave to recover and come back stronger than before.
Ribs 2020
"Neymar will miss Tuesday night's clash with FC Nantes owing to a rib problem. To be precise, he is suffering from a costochondral lesion, which translates as inflamed rib cartilage. Globo feels that the injury, which was sustained when Neymar's ribs made contact with Arnaud Souquet's feet at the end of the 1st half in PSG's clash with Montpellier on Saturday, could also keep him out of action against Lyon at the weekend." PSG coach, Thomas Tuchel, reported Neymar generally playing during training, but said, "it's too early" for him to play against Lyon. Tushel did not say whether or not Neymar would be allowed to play in the French Cup quarter-final against Dijon.
2022 Ankle
Contrary to his last incident regarding his ankles, this injury was quite severe. Neymar has obtained many ankle injuries in his career, most recently during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In Brazil vs. Serbia match, Brazil's opening game for the World Cup, Neymar was taken out of the game soon after the start of the second half when he obtained his injury through a tackle from opposing player Nikola Milenkovic. An article from Daily Mail UK describes his injury, "' With the ball at his feet Neymar was challenged by the Lille captain, and when following through to plant his right foot, the Brazilian went over his ankle, which resulted in the ligament injury. Following close attention from the home side's physios, he was then stretchered off the field in tears'" (Hogan, 2023) This injury took one of Brazil's top scorers out for the rest of the World Cup, making for a devastating loss for the team, ultimately making it so they could no longer win. "In a statement to the media at the end of the game, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said it is still too early to judge how serious Neymar's injury is. "Neymar has an injury on his right ankle, a direct trauma," Lasmar said. "Due to the impact from the knee of the Serbian player, we started immediate treatment on the bench." Neymar was later allowed to play
2023 Ankle
In a Ligue 1 match against LOSC Lille, Neymar had to be carried off the field on a stretcher after twisting his right ankle- later confirmed to be a sprain. As this was the same ankle he injured in the 2022 World Cup, Neymar was in visible pain and would require treatment to recover. "The surgery will be performed in the next few days at the ASPETAR hospital in Doha. It will take 3 to 4 months before he can return to training with the team" (Borg 2023).
2023- Ankle Surgery
Neymar underwent surgery in ASPETAR hospital in Doha on March 6, 2023, after spraining his ankle in February. This surgery was recommended by many of the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff following the recurring instances regarding the instability in his right ankle. The staff and other experts recommended ligament repair surgery to decrease the possibility of the recurrence of these types of injuries. Neymar posted on his website, neymarjr.com, "PSG MEDICAL UPDATE Neymar Jr was operated on late Friday morning at ASPETAR Hospital in Doha, by Professors Peter D'hoodge, James Calder and Rodrigo Lasmar. The intervention went very well. The player will now follow a rest and care protocol." ASPETAR is a medical partner with PSG, and this is not the first time Neymar has had to visit this hospital. He had to go to Doha for a follow-up in January 2019 from a metatarsal injury obtained in February 2018. "Neymar has not played for PSG since the Lille game when he was taken off on a stretcher, but his absence has coincided with his team's resurgence as Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi raised their levels." (AP News 2023) Neymar is supposed to be out for about four months before being allowed to train with the team again and is thought to be able to play competitively at the start of the next season.
Despite all the injuries Neymar has fought through, he still is one of the most beloved players in the world.
