Week of 9-13-23
Our HM Husky Scientists discussed and practiced what it is like to Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be an Upstander and Persevere through several team challenges in the Science Lab. They learned the importance of communicating clearly and sharing responsibilities through increasingly difficult team challenges. They also made scientific observations about animal tracks to learn about animal behaviors and guessed mystery bag items using their knowledge of scientific properties. Ask your Scientist what they are looking forward to the most in Science Lab this year!
Week of 9-20-23
Fourth Grade Scientists are learning that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth and reproduction (4-LS1-1). Students created a moving model of a finger with cut out folds as joints and strings to represent tendons. Then, they learned how difficult life would be without a thumb by participating in several activities using only their four fingers.
Week of 9-27-23
Third Grade Scientists are learning:
Pollen needs to be moved from one flower to another.
Animals help plants move pollen and seeds.
Wind and water also help plants move their seeds.
Students built a model of a flower with a stigma (tape) and pollen dusters with pollen (coffee grounds and cornmeal). Students also created a model of a fuzzy bee and moved from flower to flower in their classroom to pollinate their flowers. Students observed the different colors of pollen on their sticky stigma and learned how the life cycle of their flowers will continue.
Week of 10-18-23
First Grade Scientists learned about the parts of a plant and how plant parts help them survive and meet their needs. They grew two bean plants and learned that when one was tipped on its side, the roots continued to grow downward. The students also modeled and tested their own umbrellas after the roots, trunks, branches and leaves of trees to help them stay standing during a storm.
Week of 11-1-23
Second Grade Scientists categorized plants and animals based on their characteristics. They also developed three models of seeds to discover how different seeds travel.
Fourth Grade Scientists learned about the different parts of an eye and created their own eye models. Then they observed how the changing size of the pupil controls how much light enters the eye and connected their learning to nocturnal animals
Week of 11-8-23
First Grade Scientists learned about how animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs (1-LS1-1). Students laughed a lot while they experienced what it would be like to do tasks without opposable thumbs! They also met Miss Logue’s two pet parrots!
