About the Department
The Department of Mathematics at Banaras Hindu University has a distinguished academic legacy dating back to 1898, when it was established as part of the Central Hindu College at Kamachha, Varanasi—well before the foundation of Banaras Hindu University in 1916. In 1917, the Department became an integral part of BHU and has since evolved into an important centre for advanced teaching and research in mathematics. Over the decades, the Department has been privileged to host eminent mathematicians and scholars whose contributions have enriched its academic tradition and research culture. Its faculty members are actively engaged in diverse areas of pure and applied mathematics and have received national and international recognition, research grants, and academic distinctions for their scholarly contributions. With its rich heritage, vibrant research environment, and commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation, the Department provides an inspiring academic setting for RAPAM–2026, bringing together mathematicians and researchers from India and across the world.
