The aim of our PE curriculum is that all children will develop the traits necessary to lead healthy and active lifestyles. These are outlined below and supported through our use of the Primary PE Planning Curriculum (PPP):
The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
High levels of physical fitness.
A healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly, avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol and exercising regularly.
The ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
The ability to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
Exceptional levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
A keen interest in PE. A willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra-curricular sport.
The ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
Our PE Curriculum uses substantive concepts (our ‘Big Ideas’) as the basis for supporting pupils to form a schema (a conceptual system for understanding knowledge). Children’s schema is strengthened through knowledge and connections deepen through tasks. Knowledge is sequenced and mapped in a coherent format so that pupils make meaningful connections.
The expectation is that, by the end of primary school, children will know and understand these key elements of ‘Working as a sports person’ to give them a solid foundation to enter the PE Curriculum curriculum at KS3.
Implementation
At Cavell, we use the Primary PE Planning (PPP) Curriculum. This ensures that all pupils have a broad and balanced curriculum with carefully sequenced steps to maximise pupil participation, enjoyment and progression of skills across a range of disciplines.
This curriculum is enriched by Commando Joe's Mission Mornings, which further support the development of character education.
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
We encourage a love of sports, games, play and an active lifestyle at Cavell.
Sign up for one of our after school sports clubs; ask your child about our adult led playtimes (where adults support children to learn to play) or ask about our lunchtime football tournaments!
Commando Joe's Mission Mornings help children to develop strong interpersonal skills, whilst solving a range of topic-themed active adventures.
Get active on the Orienteering Course that weaves through the forest school, allotment and playing field.
Assessment is embedded into every lesson, this is facilitated by the Progress-o-meters, which allow for pupils to assess their own and others' progress in the lesson. These
INSPIRE DEVELOP CHALLENGE
assessments help the pupils focus on what they can do and how they can improve.
The Progress-o-meters also enable teachers to assess the pupils' progress in each lesson. Pupils can be recorded as the following:
Working towards
At expected
Above expected
Most able
The above is also linked to the ‘steps to success’ developed as a Teaching and Learning scaffold and incorporated within every lesson framework.
