The aims of our Life Learning curriculum are that all children will be supported to celebrate their uniqueness and take responsibility for their health and wellbeing, now and in the future. We will teach them the positive values and skills needed to enjoy healthy, safe and positive relationships throughout their lives whilst preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. These are outlined below:
Develop and maintain healthy social relationships including family relationships, friendships and relationships with other children and adults.
Recognise their rights and responsibilities both in the school community and in the wider world.
Understand where to seek help and how to ask for help.
Value and respect differences in themselves and other people.
Develop an understanding of how to stay safe both online and offline
Name different body parts and understand how bodies grow and change over time
Recognise and respond to a range of feelings and emotions in themselves and in others
Make good choices for their physical and mental health
Understand the importance of self-respect and self-worth.
Teachers plan from our school’s progressive planning document with support from the Norfolk RSE scheme of work. We also complete observations of our children which means, if it becomes apparent that there is a need for a certain topic to be taught and discussed at a certain time, it can be.
Over the three terms in school, Life Learning is taught every fortnight through the following topics:
Autumn term - ‘The Big World’.
A chance for children to learn about, and recognise, their responsibilities in the school community and in the wider world through lessons such as road safety, money management and the importance of taking care of the environment.
Spring term - Relationships Education
Children will be taught the statutory content for Relationships Education which includes: how to build and maintain healthy relationships (both online and offline), including family relationships, friendships and romantic relationships.
Summer term - Health and Wellbeing
Within this topic pupils are taught the statutory content for Health Education which includes learning about keeping themselves and others safe, including who to ask for help, what they should do in emergency situations and about basic first aid. Pupils in Year 6 learn how sexual intercourse can lead to reproduction and how to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
The learning which takes place in Life Learning lessons is recorded in the class ‘Learning Journey’ through notes, comments, photographs, drawings and other records of pupil participation depending on teacher preference. For our youngest children, individual observations are continuously made and these are added to children’s online learning journeys using Tapestry. Formative assessment will be conducted by teaching staff during Life Learning lessons through observations and short written exercises.
We know that our children relish the opportunity to talk to experts and inspirational people, so our curriculum aims to embrace this. Last year(2021), we met Chris Lubbe, who discussed apartheid in Africa and his work with Nelson Mandela. This year, we are due to meet Bart Gee in September.
