Hello there! My name is Mr. Doug Banwart and I teach the history courses at BHHS: US History, World History, European History, AP Human Geography, Sociology, AP GoPo, AP Macro, History of Sports, and a dual credit Honors US History course through Lewis and Clark Community College. I am also the Scholastic Bowl coach, Debate Club sponsor, basketball announcer, and bus driver.
I am in my 18th year of teaching. Time sure does FLY when you're having fun! Bunker Hill is a FANTASTIC place to live and work. This is my 8th year at BHHS and I am having the time of my life. We have some amazing students, faculty, and staff members at this wonderful high school. My wife and I have 5 children (6 when you count our exchange student!), including 2 sets of boy/girl twins: Stryder and Arianna (12), Lily (8), and Summer and Gabe (6). We live in Bunker Hill and very much enjoy the small-town atmosphere and the friendly people that we see every day.
I received my Bachelors in History Education from Illinois State University in 2007, a Masters in Educational Administration at Grand Canyon University in 2011, and a Masters in History from Western Illinois University in 2014. My hobbies include traveling, adventuring with my family, playing or watching sports, reading, catching up with friends, and participating in church and community activities.
I have the rare privilege of educating the next generation of Americans every day in my classroom. Teachers are more than just teachers; they are role models, mentors, confidantes, and an inspiration to students. Students are the reason I come to school every day. Let’s learn, have fun, be busy, and grow together! I see you, I hear you, and I am here for you. Finally, I remain "forever a student” and encourage my students to be lifelong learners, always acquiring new knowledge and skills along the path of life!
