Our unit on Earth's Systems always begins with an overview explanation of what we mean by the terms "Earth's Systems" or "Earth's Spheres." There are four systems or spheres on the Earth: Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Geosphere, and Atmosphere. These four systems interact to cause different phenomena that we experience each day, such as, weather, erosin, and sustaining life. In addition, evidence of how these systems interact is clear when we explore aspects of pollution. Students will be tasked with identifying which spheres are interacting and how they could use science ideas to combat pollution based on their understanding.
In the days before COVID 19, fifth graders were fortunate to have a visit from Penobscot Nation Historian, John Francis to learn about how Indigenious technology was created thanks to the local ecosystem and without harming these systems for future use. We hope this will once again be part of our science program.
