English Language Arts
Seventh and Eighth Grade English Language Arts (ELA) is an important part of each student's middle school day. Students will use the Study Sync curriculum to explore literature that has been carefully selected to meet their grade level learning standards, while also engaging the students in higher order thinking. You can use this site to learn more about the curriculum and grade level learning targets: here.
In addition to Study Sync, students will participate in novel studies with their whole class and in small groups based on their reading preferences. Some of these books are available for you to explore more on this site: here.
Students should anticipate some reading homework throughout the year, whether it is independent reading or completing unfinished work from their class period. The curriculum is rigorous and will challenge students to explore texts and improve their writing skills in preparation for high school English and future writing courses.
About me
Welcome to 7/8 English Language Arts with Mrs. Snyder! I began teaching ELA in 2018 at BHCS for 5th graders and transitioned to the middle school for the 2023-24 school year. I am a lover of books! Paper, digital, or audio, you name it, I'll read it! My passion is to share my love of reading with students and to help them find books that are right for them. I always say, "It's not that you don't like reading, it's that you haven't found what you like to read, yet."
Outside of teaching, I am a parent to three BHCS students and too many cats. I live in Blue Hill with my partner in an old farm house that we might never finish fixing. I am also a lifelong student exploring additional programs of advance study in English and Creative Writing. I previously attended George Mason University where I studied Elementary Education and Social Justice. In August 2024, I completed my Master's Program in Teacher Leadership with a focus on Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at the University of Southern Maine.
My hopes for this year are to read more and travel more. I love trying new activities & foods, or working to solve challenging puzzles. I also hope to enjoy some Yoga, citizen science, creative projects, and running this year.
