Throughout the year, I will make recommendations for books I believe the students will enjoy. I will do this in a variety of ways, such as: Book Trailers, First Chapters, Book Talks, and sharing Reviews. It is my hope that we will also continue to gather recommendations from students for students. Students will have the opportunity to create their own trailers, talks, and reviews. They will also use tools like Google Slides to track books they enjoyed for me to share with their peers and future classes.
This year 7th and 8th grade students will begin with reading Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson. This book was selected to complement the Study Sync curriculum. Harbor Me is about six students who are selected to be a part of an experimental after school club, where they meet once a week to simply talk without adults present. Over time, the students learn to trust each other and share about important issues in their lives. This book will be a model text for us to connect back to throughout the year.
When our whole class novel ends, students will participate in small group novel studies with a book selected from the list below. These novels were selected as companion texts because they all share the themes of "Overcoming Obstacles" and "Coming of Age." Students will participate in whole class discussions where they can share how their novel relates to the themes and the novels their classmates are reading. Each group will have three to five students with one assignment due per week. All students are expected to read their chosen book.
Below are links to purchase the books from Amazon if you'd like to read a book at home or to replace a lost or damaged classroom book.
