Fourth Grade Curriculum Overview
English/ Language Arts

Fourth grade students will continue to grow as readers and writers. They will be exposed to a variety of genres throughout the year. There will be required titles as well as the opportunity for independent reading choices in both fiction and non-fiction categories. Students will be exposed to grade level and domain specific vocabulary. They will learn to closely evaluate the text for the purpose of analyzation. Students will learn to identify the author’s purpose. Students will learn grade appropriate grammar and writing skills. Students will write narrative, informational, and persuasive pieces. Forms of figurative language will be introduced to further comprehension and also to enhance their writing.
Fourth grade students' instructional time focuses on the following mathematical core domains:
· Counting and Cardinality
· Operations and Algebraic Thinking
· Number and Operations in Base Ten
· Number and Operations – Fractions
· Measurement and Data
· Geometry
Science
Fourth grade students will delve deeper into the Physical, Earth, and Life Sciences. Students will explore energy and motion, human uses of energy, patterns and properties of waves, patterns of Earth's features, rocks, minerals, and soil, Earth's natural hazards, the history of planet Earth, structures and their functions, and human body systems. Students will learn domain specific vocabulary and complete research related to specific topics.
Social Studies
Fourth Grade students will learn about the Regions of the United States and Pennsylvania. Units of study will include the geography, climate, history and people of each region. The students will explore the significance of immigration and research their own ancestry. The students will learn about the formation of the United States government, levels and branches of government, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizens. The role of economics within each region and its importance to the economy of the United States will be explored. Pennsylvania will be studied in greater depth focusing on the geography, climate, people, history and economy. Map skills will be reinforced throughout the year with regional maps.
