On Thursday, January 11th, 2024, Benton Harbor Tigers went against the Brandywine Bobcats in basketball. The boys’ varsity game was originally scheduled for Friday, but due to weather conditions, the game got rescheduled to Thursday. Rescheduling the game didn’t stop the crowd from showing up to support both teams. The bleachers were packed on both sides. The crowd was full of screaming fans rooting for each team. This game was heated because Brandywine's overall team record was 9-1; meanwhile, Benton Harbor’s overall team league was 10-0.
The game started with a lot of intensity. Mustapha Muhammed dunked on Jeremiah Palmer on Brandywine, and both players from each team started pushing and shoving each other, almost causing a fight. The cops and many people from the stands came onto the floor for a minute. Muhammed and Palmer were both ejected from the game.
Around the end of the first quarter, Javon Mason scored and did the “baby cradle” in the direction of a Bobcat player. The refs called a technical foul on him for that. The end of the first quarter score was 18-14, with the Tigers leading.
During the second quarter, the Tigers had a huge lead, with the score being 28-17. The crowd was roaring and cheering for both sides. Josiah King had 12 points. During the end of the second quarter, the score was 33-27, and the Tigers were still holding the lead. Josiah King and Byron Linley both had 14 points for their team.
In the third quarter, Antwan Callahan continued scoring many buckets for the Tigers, who were still leading with the score being 41-33. Brandywine players scored a couple three-point baskets, keeping them still in the game. The end of the third quarter score was 55-44, with the Bobcats catching up to the Tigers, and keeping the score close.
Finally, in the last quarter, the final score was 72-59, with the Tigers taking home the victory, and making their overall record 11-0. Overall, this was a very hype game to watch with Benton Harbor Tigers and the Brandywine Bobcats. The Bobcats will be able to have another chance to rematch against the Tigers on February 16th, 2024, at Brandywine High School.

Meet the Team
By Da’Marien Bell
11/17/23
Friday, November 17, 2023, Varsity Cheerleading Coach Candice Walker hosted Meet the Team night in the Don Farnum Gym. The freshly painted walls, freshly waxed floor, and fresh new outfits made the event special, like a fresh start. The crowd was thrilled to welcome the new cheerleading and basketball teams.
Assistant Coach Devin Alexander tasked me with dividing the varsity players into two teams, and I tried to equally match the teams. Antwan, “Chick”, who is a senior guard, was teamed up with Jaeden Meeks a senior wing who didn’t play last year due to injury, Rodney Ford another senior guard, the new freshmen KeSean Hobbs listed at 6’4”, Careem Williams a 6’2” junior wing, and Latrell “Willie” Johnson a two-year guard who can shoot from the outside.
The other team had Josiah King a senior guard/wing, Javon Mason a senior who didn’t play last year due to injury, Da’Juan Hassel a first-year varsity guard, J’Kwon Lewis a junior guard looking to put on for rankings in the state, Avion Wilson another junior who is looking to be noticed this year, DeSean Mathison a two-year varsity wing who is ready to work and hungry for minutes, and Myron Rice a new student coming from Countryside Charter.
They all played well in the scrimmage game. No one got hurt, and everyone had fun. Unfortunately, a fight between girls in the crowd ended the game early.

Benton Harbor Loses to Berrien Springs 38-14
10/13/2023
Even though Benton Harbor moved the ball and managed the clock, the loss of Damari Crayton and Monty Duckett to injuries in the second half, and the loss of containment for big plays allowed Berrien Springs to end the Tigers' hopes for a championship.
Junior Varsity Volleyball Starts a Rebuilding Season

On October 10th, 2023, the Benton Harbor High School volleyball team went against Godwin High School's JV team. The Benton Harbor Tigers fought hard and lost 25-21 in the first set and 25-22 in the second set. This was a very interesting game for my team and me, since it was the first volleyball game we were able to play since the season started. This game was a battle that pushed us to our limits, but we refused to back down. Our first game taught the team the true meaning of teamwork and perseverance. This match against Godwin tested our ability to work together as a team, but sadly the match ended in defeat.
When we arrived at the school, we were able to come in and start warming up as a team. Our spirits were so pumped as the background music played, and we waited for the clock to hit 5:30, so we could start. As the game began, our team was filled with high energy and determined to take home the victory. We took the court with confidence in our hearts. We relied on the skills and the strategies we learned in practice for the first start of the match. The opponents we faced were very competitive, but that did not intimidate us.
As the game progressed, the pressure kept building up. We seemed to become more frustrated with ourselves, but that didn’t stop us. With every pass, set, and serve we were able to learn from our mistakes for the future games. We were able to get a lead during the middle of the first match, but somehow our opponents caught up. Godwin started to match us point for point, showing off some serious teamwork skills. This is where the team and I started to worry, but we were still determined to win. This game taught us that volleyball is a team sport that requires everyone to give their best effort.
In the second set of Benton Harbor High School vs. Godwin High School, Benton Harbor unfortunately fell short, losing by only three points. It was a tough battle, but we did not give up. Despite losing, we learned from this loss to work as a team and to take our practice more seriously. However, we were able to show determination and fought hard until the end of the match. We displayed sportsmanship to the opposing team and congratulated them once the set ended. The game was filled with high tension moments and adrenaline coming from every player. Even though we weren't able to take home the victory, everyone had fun playing our first game together as a team.
I was able to interact with two of my teammates to get their voice on the game between Benton Harbor High School and Godwin High School. Nevaeh Williams states, “In my opinion, I think that our team did really well for our first game together. I think we should practice moving our feet and calling the ball.” Monteonna Duckett states, “I think that the game against Godwin went okay. I was able to have good serves, sets, passes, etc. The team overall did a great job for our first game together. The only issue that our team had was some teammates being lazy and not giving their full effort.”
To conclude, the JV game between Benton Harbor High School and Godwin High School was incredible for both teams. We were both able to show skill and determination on the court. This was a game filled with excitement and memorable moments that will be cherished by many players, and even coaches. There was so much improvement our team showed from the first practice, to the first game. We were only three points away from victory, which makes the defeat harder to swallow. Although the outcome wasn’t in our favor, our team took pride in our strong performance and will use it as motivation for future matches.
Benton Harbor Rolls over Brandywine 24-0
10/6/2023
Coming off two losses, Benton Harbor brought the energy to overcome Brandywine on both sides of the ball. The offense scored quickly in their first possession, and the defense shut Brandywine down for the rest of the game.
Senior Luesheono Johnson attributed “The fire in our hearts and our desire to go to the playoffs” to the big win against Brandywine. There were other changes as well as changes in attitude.
Senior Raymond Porter said, “We had to use a new defensive formation. We were using a 4-5-2, and we switched to a 3-5-3. We moved people around to different spots.” Those changes made a big difference. They led to Benton Harbor’s first shutout of the season.
Athletic Director Van Hoven says, “With a win against Brandywine and a win against Berrien Springs, we can win the Conference Championship.”
Tigers Have the Momentum with Meeks
By Da'Marien Bell
9/14/2023
I interviewed some of the seniors on the football team and many of them had the same response. Quarterback Jaeden Meeks is a leader. His playstyle is he can do it all – throw it or run it. When asked about the win against Constantine he said, "I feel that we had everything clicking and the momentum was on our side, and I felt that it was a team effort and the offensive line did a good job."
After I spoke to Jaeden Meeks, I asked Avontae "Butta" Tasker, who is a senior looking to receive interest and offers, “How do you feel about the Constantine win?” He said it felt great, and he said, "We came together as a team, and I feel that it was Jaeden Meeks who lead the team to this win." Butta is a confident receiver and makes smart reads on defense and offense.
Julius Watkins and Jaylien Sanders are also seniors who have goals to set. Both are looking to receive offers and academic scholarships. When asked how they felt about their win and beating the number 1 team in the Division, they said "It feels great that it was a team effort and everyone was doing their job, and it shows because a lot of people doubted the 2024 class on football – saying they wouldn't win any games because of the past two seasons."
Rodney Ford is another senior who has high expectations for himself and the team. Before we ended the interview, he said, "It was a good team win; they dominated on both sides of the ball." He felt that “Jaeden Meeks won the game by his good reads, touchdowns, and making smart passes during the game."
Raymond Porter and Monty Duckett, two more seniors on the team, said, "Meeks and the defense won the game because without defense they wouldn't have had any stops, and doing good on defense gave the offense the energy to win." Duckett, who recently received an offer from Roseville Academy to play football said, "It’s only up from here."
Dejuan Webster is a senior left guard and defensive end. When asked about his game, he told me, "I am a go-get-it grind player." When asked how he felt about the Constantine win he said, "It was fun, and I had a great game, and we wanted it more." He felt that it was the defense, because he said, "We shut them down in the second half, and it was big for us.” His goals are to keep working and before the season is over to receive offers.
Benton Harbor Loses to Muskegon Catholic Central 14 - 18
9/8/2023
Despite making fewer mistakes then they had made in their first two games, the Tigers let a win against Muskegon Catholic Central slip through their hands in the 4th quarter.
Jaeden Meeks led a final drive down the field with a long pass connecting with Avontae Tasker. With only a few yards to go, the next snap of the ball sailed by the quarterback, Jaeden Meeks, and Muskegon Catholic Central recovered the fumble. With only two minutes left and one first down conversion, the Crusaders were able to run the clock out.
First Win of the Season
8/31/2023
Jaeden Meeks told Rodney Ford before the game on Thursday, August 31 against Constantine that “We’re faster than them.” That confidence carried the Tigers to a 22-16 win in their second game of the season.
The offensive line did their job and gave quarterback Meeks time to scramble and connect with receivers. When the receivers were covered, Meeks could use his speed to pick up the yards. Avontae Tasker, Za’Chari Sanders, Rodney Ford, and Julius Watkins all had receptions.
On the other side, the defense was able to stop Constantine from scoring in the second half of the game. Monty Duckett said, “We wanted it more, and we played to the end.”
