Anay'sia Washington receives the McDonald's Black History Maker Scholarship from McDonald's Owner/Operators of Greater Indiana and Southwest Michigan at Benton Harbor High School. Anay'sia was surprised by the scholarship. She said “This scholarship changed the way I think about scholarships because I felt like I wasn't going to win."
The McDonald's scholarship gives Anay'sia a step into her future. She says “I’m very happy about getting this scholarship because it will be helping me get books or it will help me with my classes.”
Students are inspired to follow Anay'sia's footsteps.

Field Trip to Wayne State University and The Charles H. Wright Museum
By Zaria Williams
On December 15th, 2023, my peers and I went on a field trip to Wayne State University and The Charles H. Wright Museum. These two places are located in Detroit, Michigan. The excitement first started when we arrived at Wayne State. We were greeted by two seniors who attend Wanye State. The two students greeted us by introducing themselves and playing a fun game with us called Jeopardy. Many of the students enjoyed the game that was played in the classroom. We then went to eat; the food was amazing. The food ranged from fries and pizza to waffles and sausage. Finally, we went on a tour around the college. There was so much to see around campus. We visited a workout place, a game room, different classrooms, and an indoor mountain climbing facility.
After the visit to Wayne State University, we went over to the Charles H. Wright Museum. This place was spectacular. There were so many exhibits and drawings to look at. Charles H. Wright Museum is an all black historical museum dedicated to historical black fine arts. When we arrived at the museum, there was so much to look at and do. We first started by walking around and looking at all the realistic statues that told deep stories behind them. Then, we went to watch a short film on slavery at the museum, which was really interesting. There was even a gift shop with various things you could purchase ranging from clothes to Tupperware.
Ultimately, the field trip to Detroit, Michigan was amazing for many students, including me. There was so much we were able to see and do. Many students had a good time on the trip to Wayne State University and Charles H. Wright Museum.

Step Africka! Performance
By Tiania Tyson
11/13/2023
Step Afrika! is a black step group that gets together for events and performances. November 13, 2023, Step Afrika! came to Benton Harbor High School to perform a step show and to explain what Step Afrika! is about and what they do. They told us their backgrounds, where they came from, and how they ended up where they are now. Some of the members were either currently or formerly a part of a sorority or a fraternity, and some went to college for arts, performance, and dance. Step Afrika! empowers the black community with positive images through dance and more.
Facts about Step Afrika!:
Step Afrika! is one of the top 10 African-American dance companies in the United States.
2. In their show, Drumfolk, dance troupe Step Afrika! uses the art of stepping to tell a story of African-American history – one inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739 and the Negro Act of 1740.
3. Step Afrika! is based in Washington D.C.
4. Step Afrika! says their preference is for stepping – “Stepping is a percussive, highly-energetic art form first developed through the song and dance rituals performed by African-American fraternities and sororities.”
Election Day
By Zaria Williams
11/7/2023
On November 7, 2023, Benton Harbor High School held election day. The residents of Benton Harbor were able to come together and vote on who they wanted their future mayor to be.
Former mayor, Marcus Muhammad, ran against Gwen Johnson and the residents were able to decide who they would want to serve their city. Johnson has done many things around the community and is known for her positive energy. Meanwhile, this was Muhammad's third time running for mayor of Benton Harbor.
Unfortunately, on election day Muhammad wasn’t in town for the election, but rather he was on a plane coming from Washington D.C where he was recognized by President Joe Biden for his hard work of getting rid of the contaminated water in Benton Harbor.
The election results were announced later that night. Muhammad had a count of 483 votes, while Johnson had a count of 361 votes. Congratulations to Mayor Muhammad for winning the mayoral election this year. This will be his third term as serving mayor of Benton Harbor.
This election reminded us that every vote matters, especially in a small town. Congratulations to Mayor Muhammad on his well deserved victory, and best luck to him as he continues to serve the city.
Fall Spirit Week
By Zaria Williams
11/3/2023
This past week, Benton Harbor High School had an exciting spirit week. This week, students were able to show off their creativity and school spirit with these fun theme days for Fall Spirit Week.
First up was Breast Cancer Pink Out Day. Everyone was encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness and support for those who are fighting against breast cancer. It was a very unique way for the school to come together and show their support.
Then there was costume day. Since Halloween was placed on a Tuesday this year, the second day of spirit week, students were encouraged to show off their best Halloween costumes. It was a chance for students to celebrate Halloween and show off their creative costumes.
Yeehaw! Cowboy day was another highlight of Benton Harbor High School spirit week. Students came in dressed like cowboys and cowgirls, with their hats and boots. On Wednesday the school transformed into the Wild West.
Don’t forget about twin day. Thursday students came in and teamed up with their friends or classmates dressed alike. Students were able to create their own twin outfits together, creating fun matching twin outfits. It’s a good way to showcase friendship.
As if that wasn’t enough, finally Friday was 90’s day for students. It was an amazing chance for students to dress in their 90’s throwback fashion attire. Baggy jeans, flannel shirts, scrunchies, and so much more! It was a super fun way to celebrate and show off their 90’s style.
I was able to interview two of my peers to get their opinions on spirit week. Makiah Kline states, ”I didn’t participate in fall spirit week this week because it was very last minute. I think this was better than homecoming spirit week because it had more things.”
Donald Harell states, ”I didn’t do fall spirit week because I couldn’t find anything for it. This spirit week was really random and they did it out of nowhere. It was something positive for the school though.”
In conclusion, Fall Spirit Week for Benton Harbor High School was amazing. Everyone who participated was able to come and show off their different styles and ideas. Spirit Week definitely left an impression on students.

Kesha Jones Challenges Students to Avoid Distractions and Pursue Their Goals
09/20/2023
While students were assembled in the Performing Arts Center, a woman came on stage and shouted, “There’s a fight! There’s a fight!” She ran off the stage to see if any students would follow her, but everyone stayed in their seats. Although the students didn’t chase after her to see a fight, the message was clear – fights are a distraction, and “Distractions are the number 1 thing stopping people from finding their purpose in life.”
Kesha Jones made the point that “You are in control of your life.” Her messages of self-awareness and self-empowerment are grounded in a growth mindset. She gave students several examples of how she had lost her way and grown better, stronger and more successful through the process of growth. She had gone from skipping class every day to being a top student at Benton Harbor High School; in college, she had gone from being overweight to losing weight; and after college, she had gone from being cared for by her parents to caring for them.
Currently, Kesha Jones holds a Masters of Education degree and serves as the Pre-College Coordinator/Advisor for the TRIO Upward Bound Program working with Benton Harbor High School students and preparing them for their goals and college. She is also a Motivational Lifestyle Educator and Public Relations specialist in the social media space. She coaches people on health and wellness as well as helping people find their true purpose in life while being their true authentic selves.
