A passion for career counseling led me into a career as a school counselor. All career opportunities are open to GMS students. If your student would like to join the military, attend trade school, go to college, or start right away in the workforce, I would love to help them explore their next steps.

One way to get a handle on it is by thinking about what kind of career you are interested and researching education requirements for those careers. Take a career interests inventory and read up on possible careers at the links below.

If you think you would like to play collegiate sports, you should be aware of the eligibility requirements. High school requirements are different for Division I and Division II. A good rule of thumb, however, is 4 x 4 = 16. If you take one credit of math, language arts, science, and social studies every year that you are in high school, you will meet the requirements to be considered for a spot on a college team. To play DI sports, you need a high school GPA of 2.3, and a 2.2 GPA for DII schools. Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships and set their own eligibility requirements.
It is also important to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center in 10th grade if you want to play NCAA sports at a DI or DII school. Students wanting to play at DIII schools are not required to create an account with the Eligibility Center.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation provides a 5-year pre-college scholarship that includes academic and college advising. Selected Young Scholars are also able to apply for a $40,000 college scholarship at the end of their high school careers. This is a great program devoted to providing support to high-achieving students. 7th graders are invited to apply during the spring semester.
The GEAR UP program is a great opportunity for students who qualify. GMS will be working with our local GEAR UP coordinators to help build the GEAR UP program at GMS in an effort to help make college a possibility for every student that would like to go.
