Clothespin Number Match
Material:
Game Card
Clothespins with numbers 1-6
Instruction:
Players need to count the dots and add the corresponding clothespin.
What this is good for:
Selects counting as a strategy to solve problems, without prompting.
Finger Match
Materials:
None
Instructions:
Both players make a fist. Player 1 says “ Match-my-fingers” and reveals any number of fingers from 1 to 5.
Player 2 has to match the fingers that Player 1 shows and then say the number. Players then switch roles and repeat.
Challenge:
Vary the ways you show a certain number. For example, the number 2 can be shown by a thumb and forefinger, a ring and little finger, a thumb and little finger ETC.
What this is good for:
Subitising ( seeing how many objects there are without actually counting)
“Building” Number Sense
Materials:
Game Card
Lego or snap cubes
Dice
Instructions:
Choose a square on the placemat.
Say the number.
Use blocks to build a tower on that number on the placemat.
Challenge:
Roll one die.
Say the number and find it on the placemat.
Use Blocks to build a tower on that number on the placemat.
What is this good for:
Careful counting including using counting as a strength to solve problems.
Cover The Number
Materials:
Game Board, one die
Counters or Poker Chips
Piece of paper to write the numbers 1 through 10.
Instructions:
Start by using the game board with numbers ( #1)
Start on the sunflower.
Roll a dice and move around the gameboard.
Identify what number you land on.
Continue until all the numbers are covered.
Try playing with game board #2, and identify the numbers displayed in words and pictures.
What this is good for:
Carefully counting includes knowing that the order in which the objects are counted doesn’t affect how many there are.
