Student Publishing for Authentic Audience (Magazine Creation)
Communication & Collaboration
Ashley Holst (ASB-Technology Coordinator)
Description of Project:
In this activity students created a publication (magazine) in order to publish their "This I Believe" writing for an authentic audience. After reading several coming of age books, students then wrote their own personal essays around moments in time that shaped them. After their essays were written, they were tasked with taking three photos to capture the essence of the essay (a photographer expert came in to give students tips on this). The final task was to put the essay and photos together into one layout. Again, a guest teacher came in to talk about design. Each student will created one layout, which was then put together as one book or magazine. Each student received a copy of their work, and there was a celebration with parents in the library. The library also has a copy stored foreach year as both an exemplar and check out.
Technology Used:
Google Docs (for essay writing and editing)
Personal devices (smartphone for photo taking)
Adobe Photoshop (to edit photos as desired)
Adobe InDesign or Canva to create the individual magazine layouts
This project is a way to apply Albert Einstein's famous motto:
"If you cannot explain something simply it is because you do not understand it well enough" .
This project is to introduce the use of video lessons to make the juniors to learn the content watching the videos that seniors have been producing.
My role here is to investigate how a good instructional video should look like, and to teach and help them to learn and do produce one.
Resources to Share:
In order to record videos from your presentations you can use Quicktime.
In order to produce your video you ca use Adobe Premiere Rush.
Of course all the traditional software you might use for text, spreadsheet, and slides Produce the video and adapt the script and materials in the process.
Learn More about this Topic (add resources for others to learn more about here):
Write down an accurate video script as the one you see in this presentation. Otherwise it is impossible to be produced.
The best videos of each unit will be posted in a specific YouTube channel accessible to the whole community with the intend to create a whole digital course done by and for students.
Educational Technology for Maths (and subjects that use maths in some way)
Claudia Blanc
BFIS, Educational Tech & System Administrator
Description of Project:
When searching and using educational technology for Maths classes in Middle & High School, sometimes teachers feel a mix between overwhelming task (due to the complexity of some applications) and disapointing results (due to the simplicity of other ones) that leads them to abandon the mission.
I have gathered some options that try to fill in the gap between the most suitable applications for Elementary and the more sophisticated ones for High School or Colleges.
I revamped a project using the SAMR model. (see resources on tech integration). The project is an end of the year history project to allow the students a chance to show their learning in a creative and collaborative way. The students were put in groups based around abilities. (They took a google form about their skills in lyrics, singing, musical instruments and technology) They then chose a topic (see doc for major themes) and a song.
After choosing their song they rewrote the lyrics to include specific facts and analysis that related to their particular chosen theme. They made a google doc to show what lyrics they changed with a brief description at the bottom to talk about what they included or changed and why. (see exemplar)
They then recorded their songs using our music rooms, and garageband.
After making the MP3s they created the music video using green screen and then did a classroom presentation and led a classroom discussion about their chosen topic.
