The object of the AP course in United States Government and Politics is to present the student with an in-depth look at how the American government came to be; why the Founders gave it the structure that they did, and how that structure is implemented in our lives in the present day. This will include not only a look at the practices that direct the daily operations of our government, but also an exploration of the political theory that shaped the U.S. government two hundred years ago compared to the political theory that shapes it now. The course examines politically significant concepts and themes, through which students learn to apply disciplinary reasoning, assess causes and consequences of political events, and interpret data to develop evidence-based arguments.
This class is a college level class that will require rigorous reading and writing assignments. There will be required reading from the textbook, the 12 grade history reader, along with supplemental sources. Majority of your reading will be done outside of class, and class time will be spent discussing the topics that emerge from these sources. We will do this by becoming political scientists. We will begin to analyze primary and secondary sources, have class discussions, and express our opinions through writing and other activities. Below are the expectations of my class and ways for you to be successful in the course and on the A.P. exam in May.
