Overview
The University of Portland is a private Catholic university in Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1901 and is affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross, which also founded UP's sister school the University of Notre Dame. The university has a student body of approximately 4,200 students. It is the only comprehensive Catholic university in Oregon. The campus is located in the University Park neighborhood near St. Johns, on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River. The campus itself is a traditional college campus with three residential quads consisting of ten residence halls.
UP has six divisions of study: the College of Arts & Sciences, the Pamplin School of Business Administration, the School of Education, the Shiley School of Engineering, the School of Nursing, and the Graduate School. The most popular majors for undergraduates are Nursing, Biology, Marketing & Management, Finance, Elementary Education, Organizational Communication, Psychology, and Spanish.
The University of Portland was ranked as the 2nd best "Regional University", tied at 3rd best for undergraduate teaching, and 19th for "Best Value School" in the Western region by U.S. News & World Report for 2021
Admission to UP is rated as "more selective" by U.S. News & World Report . For the fall of 2018, UP received 10,666 freshman applications; 8,046 were admitted (75.4%) and 1,004 enrolled. The average GPA of the enrolled freshmen was 3.65. The middle 50% range of SAT scores were 580-660 for reading and writing, and 560-660 for math, while the middle 50% ACT composite range was 23-28.

All full-time undergraduate students are members of the Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP), and there are 17 senators who represent the interests of the student body. The weekly meetings are a public forum, and all members of the University are invited to attend.
The Moreau Center for Service and Justice offers a variety of opportunities to engage with the community—locally, regionally, and internationally—and learn about critical social issues. In the days leading up to Orientation, the Plunge Into Your Neighborhood experience immerses first-year students in their new community. There are more "immersions" during fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks. The Moreau Center can help you connect with a community partner whose mission and outreach resonates with you.
The power of purple – be part of the action on or off the field. At the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, you’ll have access to an abundance of fitness classes, equipment, and more. You can sign up for trips offered by our Outdoor Pursuits Program and explore Oregon through hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, and other activities. Show your purple pride by supporting your fellow students. With 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, there are lots of opportunities to cheer on Pilots athletics.
