Cold weather and travel with instruments

Travel with instruments:

If you're traveling over break and considering bringing an instrument, consider the following carefully. If in doubt, leave the instrument at home!

- Car travel: Okay to take instrument IF in temperature-controlled vehicle at all times. CANNOT be left in car once parked, even for short periods of time. Avoid putting in trunk if possible. Consider whether instrument could be damaged at destination (pets, young children, lots of people, etc.).

- Airplane travel: DO NOT take instrument. Hassle and risk are too great. There are strict rules specifically for musical instruments on airplanes. Often instruments are not allowed to be carried on place. Instruments CANNOT be checked as luggage, as they will be damaged.

Cold weather affects instruments:

String instruments are very susceptible to cold (and warm) weather. A good rule of thumb is that if it's uncomfortably cold/hot for people, then it's damaging to the instrument.

- Do NOT leave instruments in parked car, outside, or in garage/porch.

- Always store instrument in closed case when not in use.

- Avoid storing instruments near warm/cold spots in buildings (near heat/air vents, fireplaces, radiators, windows/exterior doors/drafty spots, etc.)

- Avoid extreme temperature/humidity changes. Instruments will do best when temperature/humidity stay consistent.

- If something is loose, strings are out of tune, or something seems to be broken do NOT try to fix it. Contact an orchestra teacher or the music store.

- If you have humidifier at home, running it in same room as instrument can help instrument stay in tune, but do not place instrument directly in front of humidifier. Leave instrument in closed case.

These are the dates/times reserved for performances at this time. Please plan for students to attend all of their respective performances and we will notify you in the unlikely event of any changes. Please contact an orchestra teacher as soon as possible should your student be unable to attend any of the performances using the absence form or the information below.
