Public Transportation

In the classroom students will plan a local bus trip using the Lane Transit District (LTD) Rider’s Digest, the LTD website, or Google Maps.  Students will have weekly opportunities to plan a trip in the community using a BCTN developed bus plan. Each student will have opportunities to work toward facilitating a safe execution of a bus plan (with staff support or independently).  If, for example, students missed a bus stop or took the wrong bus, staff would monitor the situation and allow the students to use problem-solving strategies.  Following the trip, students and staff debrief aspects of the trip that went well and identify focus areas for future trips. Students will specifically make a bus plan and a backup bus plan, read schedules, identify landmarks, write/verbalize plans, implement plans, practice safety in the community and on the bus, and follow the plan. Bus trip locations will include: identifying areas in the community for social/leisure opportunities and outside agencies for continued transition support. Social skills are also incorporated on the bus trips in a variety of situations (ex: appropriate conversations in the community, how to protect yourself from strangers, and how to ask for help from a safe person etc.).

Always sit with your group.

Wait patiently at the bus stop and be visible to the bus driver.

Stay aware of your surroundings so you don't miss your stop.

Let other passengers get off the bus before getting on.
