Our goal at Beroean Christians, is to give individuals an opportunity to read and study the Bible, and to equip each person to make informed decisions on its teachings. This is through fellowship meetings, onsite and online, sharing research, and supporting each one to grow in knowledge, faith and wisdom.
This is probably the most effective method. This involves reading and studying a specific Bible book in its original context. This means identifying the author, the target audience, the estimated time of writing and the historical context. In addition, gathering an understanding of the geography, customs, manner, languages, etc. relevant to that time period.
The aim is to understand the meaning for the initial audience and then to extrapolate principles and commands that might apply in our lives. To be effective, the OIA method (Observation, Interpretation and Application), strictly in that order. This helps us to try and stay with the text and discount any pre-knowledge of the verses.
Once, the book has been studied in context, the follow up would be to consider the events, thoughts, concepts and principles in relation to other Bible books.
This approach gives the most thorough understanding but takes time to develop.
This is a very popular approach. The method is to pick a topic and to look up the various verses in the Bible state about the subject. This method is popular for those who have questions that need immediate answers. It is also used in understanding various Church Creeds and Doctrines.
This approach has one drawback as at times not all the scriptures on the subject are considered and more importantly, the verses might not be considered in their context.
Many people would like to have a One-to-One discussion and study using one or both methods. This could be for the following reasons:
Help answer very specific questions
To adapt to an individual's personal learning style, or speed of study
Provide privacy
We can arrange this upon request. For this to work it must be understood that the one helping is there not as an authority figure but someone who can facilitate and help teach the various approaches on Bible reading and study.
