Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Screening for ages 3 to 5

If you are a parent/guardian of child between the ages of 3 to 5 and suspect the child may have a developmental delay or handicapping condition that may affect him/her educationally, and the child lives in the Bernie Public School District, please contact or leave a message for Lindsay Beaird or Tommie Ellenburg at 573-293-5335 to make an appointment for an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) screening.

The Early Childhood Special Education program identifies and educates students who may have gaps in development in one or more of the following areas: physical, cognitive, communication, social/emotional, or adaptive.

Screenings will be conducted throughout the school year on the dates listed below. Once an appointment is scheduled, the parent/guardian will need to bring the child’s

1) birth certificate

2) social security card

3) Medicaid number (if child has one)

4) First Steps information (if child has been involved with First Steps)

The screening will be done at Bernie Elementary School. Please check in at the Bernie Elementary Office before your appointment.


Following is the tentative schedule for the 2022-2023 school year screening dates. This child must be three years of age by the screening date.

  • Thursday, August 26th

  • Thursday, September 23rd

  • Thursday, October 28th

  • Friday, November 19th

  • Friday, December 10th

  • Friday, January 28th

  • Friday, February 25th

  • March 16th, 17th & 18th (Kindergarten/Preschool Screening)
