The Bernards Township Social Studies program is committed to guiding students in the acquisition of knowledge, skills and habits of mind that will enable the students to interpret and analyze the society in which they live and will inspire in students a desire to become thoughtful, reasoned and active participants in their communities.

department MISSION

• To provide an educational program that integrates subject knowledge and concepts, fundamental skills, and ideals of American and global society. 

• To foster in students an appreciation of and a commitment to basic ideals of American and global society. 

• To develop in students the ability and inclination to employ critical thinking and decision-making strategies, in order to better read the world and be agents within it. 

• To enable students to apply social scientific methods toward understanding human experiences as they relate to societies. 

• To encourage students to actively participate in society by exercising skills and habits of mind appropriate for a pluralistic democracy. 

• To enable students to apply knowledge and concepts from history, civics, economics, geography, and the social sciences toward understanding human experiences as they relate to societies. 

• To develop in students an understanding of the uniqueness and interdependence of regions and nations in a global age. 

• To foster in students a desire for continued learning and curiosity about their world.
