Welcome to the BHS LMC Virtual Space
Welcome to the BHS LMC Virtual Space
The LMC is open to our students and staff members daily from 7:30 am-3:40 pm (including lunch). The LMC will close at 3:20 pm most Mondays to accomodate our faculty meetings.
Depending upon student interest, we host a variety of student groups, including the BHS Battle of the Books Team, Manga Club, and Game Club. The LMC is also currently developing a makerspace area for student and staff use.
The LMC has an extensive collection of resources available to our students and staff members, including print and digital materials.
It is our vision that the Library Media Center will provide an educational function designed to further the intellectual, social, and emotional development of the students, staff, and community. Our resources will be utilized by students, staff, and the community to acquire the information and skills necessary to pursue lifelong learning and reading and to become effective users of information technology.
Library Media Center (LMC) Resources:
In the BHS LMC, you may notice that our shelves look a little different. That's due to a growing trend among libraries to create a more user-friendly browsing experience for their patrons!
Here's what that means for you:
Dynamic Shelving:
With dynamic shelving, you can expect more books to be front-facing (covers easily viewable) on our fiction and nonfiction book shelves. this helps to keep series books together and helps bring attention to books by showing off their covers (because who doesn't really judge a book by its cover??).
Genrefication:
In our fiction section, our books are arranged by genre (and then by author's last name). This system ensures that all books with similar genres are found together on our shelves, which makes for an easier browsing experience for our students. Our current genres are: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Mythology, Fantasy/Supernatural, Mystery/Thriller, Horror, Historical Fiction, Action/Adventure, Sports, Books in Verse, Romance, Realistic Fiction, and Animals. These genres are noted by genre signs on the tops of our fiction shelves as well as genre stickers on the spine labels of each of our fiction books.
Disrupting Dewey:
In a typical Dewey system, sometimes books with similar topics are found throughout the library shelves. In our nonfiction section, we have adopted a practice of "disrupting Dewey" by placing similar books together on the shelves where we know students will look for them. Topics are noted by shelf labels. Inside each shelf label, books are still found in order by their Dewey Decimal number.
