Brexit has impacted a lot of families. One of those families is the M. family. Justyna M. was born in Poland, and Martin M. was born in Germany. They started becoming a family when Justyna decided to live in Germany. She travelled there on a night train so she could live with Martin and become his wife.
Mr M.’s job is as a physicist. He applied for a similar job in the UK and was successful. Martin M. then decided to go to the UK. Once it was the day for the departure Martin M. took his luggage and went on the flight. Martin M. wasn't nervous he would leave his parents a long distance away, the trip took a while.
Once Mr M. arrived in the UK he checked out flats he could live in. This was a challenge because he didn’t understand the district. After looking for a place close to his work that was good to live in, Mr M. picked a house. His wife booked a trip to the UK and she followed him afterwards.
Ms M. wasn’t great at speaking fluent English so she made an effort to learn more language skills. Ms M. left behind all her friends in Germany and that meant they would have less contact. She wouldn’t have anyone to help her become really fluent in English. By learning more English, Ms M. would have more chances to make new friends. She wasn’t too nervous about moving away from her family, because she had done it before.
A part of the process to live in the UK legally required Mr and Ms M. to complete all the bureaucratic requirements needed for residency and work. Even though Mr M. had his job as a physicist in a lab, the process was a bit more difficult for Ms M. She wanted to work closer to home, but didn’t know the area that well. After looking for jobs she liked, she was able to secure a position in an Export Import Management for a sweets company.
It took a while for Ms and Mr M. to discover the area that they lived in. They moved between districts using underground transportation. Mr M. had his work past a big park which made it easy because he could use his bike. They had to learn the British way of working and communicating with people, so they could be successful in their job. This was important because they needed money to pay their bills and for their flat rent.
Martin M. found that when he did his job the way of working was confusing to him because of the way of communication that the other people used. After a few days working and talking to people at his job, Martin M. could understand the workers better, because he had gotten used to the way that the people talked. His new job was similar to his last jobs. He liked being a physicist because he likes challenging himself by learning new things about science. Martin Munz uses his expertise to do his job.
Ms M. liked working with different international companies. She wanted to know different work cultures from around the world. Ms M. directs container shipping for a sweets company. The challenge of international business relationships was something she liked doing. When 2016 arrived the UK took a vote for if they would stay in the EU or leave the EU.
The people of the country decided to vote to leave the EU, this meant that it would be harder for non British residents to work in the UK. This was bad because some families that weren’t part of the EU couldn’t visit the UK easily. This made it harder for long distance families to stay in touch with each other. People weren’t sure what would happen when they left the EU, that made people stressed. A lot of people decided they were going to leave the UK. The M. family decided they would move to Germany because their family lived in Germany and Poland. In Germany it is also easy to get a job because they allow people from different regions.
Martin M. went on a plane to Germany before his wife. First he found a job as a physicist. He rented a flat that he could stay in. Ms M. decided to follow Martin M. The trip wasn’t scary because they have done a migration before. When they used to live in Berlin they lived in a similar area. The area has gotten a lot more modern. After living there for a few weeks they went to get the pass for being a proper citizen. They took walks around Berlin to see how the area has changed. There were a lot of new shops and some of the old shops were broken down.
When moving to a new country for the second time they weren’t as nervous as the first time because they gathered their experience. It also was easier for Mr and Ms M. to migrate to a EU country because they were both EU citizens.
