Pe'ahi , or Jaws, is located in Maui, Hawaii. Jaws produces the best conditions from December to February, reaching from 60 to 120 foot gigantic hollow barrels. Jaws is an expert-only wave, and typically requires a tow-in via jetski to reach the required speed to catch the wave. Jaws is known to be one of the most dangerous yet thrilling surf spots on the planet.
Accommodations at the Paia Inn
With Maui hotels being concetrated in the northwest and southwest of the island, the area surrounding Jaws primarily offers inns for tourists and surfers to stay. Seen above is the Paia Inn, located eight miles west from Peahi. At this inn, each guest is provided with private beach access, spacious outdoor lounge zones, free on-site parking, and WiFi, and the ability to rent out beach gear.
Jaws Country Store is the closest restaraunt to Jaws, sitting just above the cliffside which looks over the waves. The store's website displays menus for breakfast and lunch, making it a convenient pre/post-surf snack or meal. Or, take a meal to-go and eat it while watching surfers at Jaws.
Those hoping to access the Pe’ahi lookout should know that a hike is required of them! Parking is available 3 miles out from the lookout spot, and it is recommended that visitors park and hike to the lookout, especially if they do not have an all-wheel drive car. The road to the Pe'ahi lookout is known for mud that swallows car wheels, but some visitors drive as far as conditions allow.
Each year from November 15 through March 31 the Jaws Big Wave Challenge goes on standby. 24 male and 12 female surfers are invited to compete, and the competition is only held when conditions are nearly perfect. Competitors only have 72 hours to scramble their way to Maui once the event is called on.
