One of my favorite composers, Hans Zimmer, once said, “Electronic music lends itself to an abstract way of storytelling, so it keeps evolving. There’s a whole movement truly driving music forward, and there is no other genre innovating as much as film music.” This statement strongly resonates with me, as electronic music provides infinite possibilities. Take a modular synthesizer, for example, a turn of a knob or a combination of patches can create an entirely different set of soundscapes. Furthermore, we are constantly surrounded by sound. If we record sounds from our environments, sequence them, and manipulate them, anything can become musical. As a film composer myself, I know how important sound is in the process of storytelling, whether through the dialogue of the actors, the sound effects, or the music. Therefore, by double-majoring in Film and Media Scoring and Electronic Production and Design, I am constantly searching for new musical sounds and ideas to tell stories through my original music.
Growing up as a classically trained pianist, I was accustomed to the styles of conventional European classical music when playing and composing. However, I have always aspired to create something more innovative and complex. Listening to Zimmer’s scores such as The Lion King, Inception, and Interstellar has inspired me to pursue exploring different ways of creating music.
Music can transcend physical boundaries and time, connect people from different cultural backgrounds, and heal the soul. I truly believe this, as I had the opportunity to study under Czech opera singer Prof. Jana Jonašová. At the time, I did not speak Czech, nor did she speak English. Nevertheless, we were able to communicate through singing. As a vocalist, I try to incorporate voices in my compositions. In 2024, I put together an 11-person band and held a recital at Berklee’s Berk Hall, performing my original songs and arrangements of covers. Making music is a collaboration, and the results are magic.
Through my work, I hope to inspire the next generation of composers, particularly young women, to challenge themselves, pursue their passions, experiment with music in a global context, and engage with unfamiliar music from different parts of the world. Listen, explore, and make magic.
