More fiction! Building a love of fiction, storytelling, and narrative art is critical. In fact, research shows that the more people read fiction, the easier they find it to empathize with other people. “Storytelling is a form of cognitive play that hones our minds, allowing us to simulate the world around us and imagine different strategies, particularly in social situations,” says David Robson. Furthermore, “brain scans have shown that reading or hearing stories activates various areas of the cortex that are known to be involved in social and emotional processing.” Your brain needs fiction and so does your heart!
Description: Storyline Online, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White and dozens more. Reading aloud to children has been shown to improve reading, writing and communication skills, logical thinking and concentration, and general academic aptitude, as well as inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Description: Story Time from Space is a project of the Global Space Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit education foundation. They send children’s books to the International Space Station. While in space, astronauts are videotaping themselves reading these books to the children of Earth. Favorites include Ada Twist, Scientist and Rosie Revere, Engineer.
