In a traditional semester, most clubs will table in Sproul Plaza, making it easy to discover new clubs. Because of the remote learning, it's much more difficult to find clubs that may interest you. Below are some resources we've found to explore clubs.
A spreadsheet for clubs to share information about what they do, who to contact, and their recruitment process.
A student-developed website where clubs can register and share information about what they do, who to contact, and their recruitment process.
Please be wary that some clubs have a competitive application and interview process. It's absolutely okay if you don't join any clubs. You do not need to be in a technology club to succeed--join clubs that interest you and make new friends!
Tau Beta Pi is the oldest national engineering honor society in the country, and one of the most nationally recognized societies. TBP stresses scholarship, personal character, and service to the profession, community, and college. They offer many student resources, including a test bank, infosessions, and resume workshops.
Upsilon Pi Epsilon is the international honor society for the Computing Sciences backed by both IEEE and ACM. The Nu chapter at UC Berkeley prides itself on providing each of their inductees with the resources and network to maximize their individual potential. Beyond the recognition and support of our members, we additionally provide academic and professional development support to the entire Berkeley computer science community.
Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) is the national Electrical and Computer Engineering honor society. The Berkeley chapter is among the most active engineering societies at Berkeley, providing academic services to fellow undergraduates.
Theta Tau is a co-ed professional engineering fraternity here at Berkeley. They are a close knit brotherhood that encourages their members to excel professionally and give back to the surrounding community.
Some of the ASUC Senators have a tech or tech-related department that you can apply to. For example, the Office of ASUC Senator Chen has tech, data science, and social good departments.
Extracurricular opportunities aren't limited to student organizations. There are plenty of other opportunities that students can pursue:
Research:
URAP: The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) is designed to involve Berkeley undergraduates more deeply in the research life of the University. The Program provides opportunities to work with faculty and staff researchers on the cutting edge research projects for which Berkeley is world-renowned. Applications for URAP projects open at the beginning of each semester.
BAIR: The Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research (BAIR) Lab brings together UC Berkeley researchers across the areas of computer vision, machine learning, natural language processing, planning, control, and robotics. BAIR includes over 50 faculty and more than 300 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers pursuing research on fundamental advances in the above areas as well as cross-cutting themes including multi-modal deep learning, human-compatible AI, and connecting AI with other scientific disciplines and the humanities.
DARE:
Hackathons:
CalHacks: The world's largest collegiate hackathon. At Cal Hacks, teams of 4 come together to create something innovative and potentially life changing. At Cal Hacks, it is a crucial aspect of their mission to embrace and promote inclusivity, accessibility, & ethicality.
FemHacks: FEMHacks is UC Berkeley’s first all-women and non-binary hackathon. They encourage exploring technology, building creative projects, and lots of free food and swag. There will be lots of workshops, mentorship, and talks to help empower and support your tech journey. No experience is required!
SheBuilds: Girls Who Code at Berkeley hosts a 2-day hackathon for high school and college female-identifying students. It is beginner-friendly and equips participants with 21st-century skills in order to help close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does.
