Measure out the necessary quantity of 1-naphthol, dissolve it in sodium hydroxide and cool the mixture on ice.

Be sure to write down the volume of NaOH used in addition to the mass of 1-naphthol in your lab notebook.

The video shows a small brown glass reagent bottle next to a laboratory scale. The label on the bottle reads “1-NAPHTHOL.” The metal cover on the scale is removed, a piece of weighing paper placed on the scale, and the metal cover replaced. The reading on the scale is reset to zero before the metal cover is removed again. A metal scoopula is used to transfer several tiny portions of solids from the reagent bottle to the weighing paper. After the bottle is moved out of the way, we see that the clay-like solids are a pinkish red color. The reagent bottle is capped, the metal cover is replaced one last time, and we see that the screen on the scale reads “0.206 g.” In the next shot, we see the weighing paper folded diagonally and its contents being poured into a graduated test tube. A boiling stick is added to the test tube and a plastic syringe is removed from its wrapper. The syringe is used to transfer a 1 mL portion of clear liquid from a one-dram vial into the test tube. The boiling stick is then used to aggressively agitate the contents of the test tube. At first the solids are quite visible clumped at the bottom of the tube, but after the screen goes black except for the caption “More mixing…,” our next view of the test tube shows only a homogeneous, pale yellow, transparent solution inside. This fully dissolve solution is placed in a plastic tub filled with ice.
