Next, you will use the dye you synthesized in Part I to dye a multi-fiber fabric test strip.
A representative example of this process using product C is shown below.

You should take notes on this process regardless of the product you were assigned.
Results for all twelve possible products are shown on the next page.

The photo shows a piece of weighing paper on top of a laboratory scale. On top of the weighing paper are several small dollops of blackish, clay-like solids. The screen on the scale reads “0.049 g.”

The photo shows two graduated cylinders sitting side by side on the lab bench. Both are filled to the 10 mL marking with clear liquid.

sandbath temperature used

The photo shows the read out screen of a digital thermometer apparatus. The screen reads “182.”

The video shows a medium beaker sitting in a sand bath. The beaker is filled with approximately 30 mL of transparent red liquid and contains a boiling stick. Also in the sand bath is a metal temperature probe. A gloved hand picks up a strip of frayed white fabric with metal forceps and places it in the beaker, using the boiling stick to fold and fully immerse the fabric in the red liquid. The screen goes black except for a caption that reads: “Boil for 5 min…” When the video returns, we see the sides of the beaker have become significantly clouded with condensation. Forceps are again used to retrieve the fabric strip from the beaker, wipe the excess liquid on the side of beaker, and place the fabric strip on a paper towel. We see that the fabric strip consists of stripes that have been dyed many different hues of orange.
