Add sodium nitrite to the solution and cool the mixture on ice.

The photo shows a round bottom flask held in place above a magnetic stir plate by a rubber adapter. The round part of the flask is half full of clear liquid or solution. Two gloved hands pour the unseen contents of a folded piece of weighing paper into the flask, which instantly turns the contents a deep, transparent orange color. The metal bar holding the round bottom flask in place is momentarily removed while a medium beaker full of ice water is placed on the magnetic stir plate. The flask is immersed in the solution and clamped back into place. As the dial on the stir plate is turned up again to resume stirring, we see that the deep reddish-orange solution in the flask now has a foamy-looking layer of paler orange substance on top.

Add reaction mixture to HCl.
