Press X for Representation is a collaborative digital humanities project created by six undergraduate students at UC Berkeley. We aim to investigate how the representation of women in mainstream video games has evolved from 1980 to 2020. Through a combination of data analysis, historical research, and feminist critique, we examine not only how often women appear in games, but how they are portrayed—whether as protagonists, supporting figures, or stereotyped tropes. This project seeks to bridge the gap between quantitative patterns and cultural significance. By drawing on both statistical evidence and in-game content, we aim to reveal the stakes of digital representation: not just as a media trend, but as a mirror and shaper of broader social norms.
To guide your exploration of our project, we have organized the website into several sections, and we recommend you follow in the order given on the navigation bar.
Starting with the Narrative section, the Walkthrough subsection presents our central argument. It is supported by our Data Analysis, where you will find visualizations and interpretations of key trends across decades.
Following that is the Data section, a more in-depth understanding of how we gathered and processed our data. It houses our Data Critique, which offers a reflective evaluation of the datasets we used, and a comprehensive Bibliography of all sources consulted, including annotated entries that shaped our analysis.
Finally, under the About tab, Project Foundations outlines our methodology, digital tools, accessibility considerations, and acknowledgments, while Meet the Team introduces the contributors behind this work.
