The Department of Plant & Microbial Biology provides graduate students with resources that guide them through every stage of the program. From the first year to the completion of the doctoral program, students receive support tailored to their academic and professional development. This includes lab rotations, coursework, advising, qualifying exam preparation, thesis committee meetings, and final dissertation requirements. Faculty mentors, staff advisers, and peer advisers all play a role in fostering both academic success and a sense of community.
The Graduate Student Handbook serves as a central guide to program expectations and requirements, helping current students navigate milestones and stay on track throughout their time in the program.
Graduate students in Plant & Microbial Biology have access to a wide range of advising and support resources throughout their program. Advising is a team effort, with staff and faculty providing guidance on academics, teaching, administrative processes, and professional development.
The Head Graduate Adviser guides first-semester students through lab rotation selections and placements, partners with graduate advisors on exceptions and student-related issues, and oversees student progress, enrollment, degrees, and committee appointments.
Graduate Student Affairs Officers (GSAOs) provide advocacy, referrals to campus resources, academic advising to help students navigate course conflicts and program requirements, and consultation on funding packages.
Equity Advisers support inclusion, equity, and mentoring challenges, while the GSI Adviser provides guidance on teaching and advocates for Graduate Student Instructors.
Peer Mentors help early-year students navigate challenges, connect with senior peers, and access resources. Together, these services give students the guidance and support they need to thrive academically, professionally, and personally.
