The Department of Plant & Microbial Biology (PMB) at UC Berkeley offers two outstanding doctoral programs: a Ph.D. in Plant Biology and a Ph.D. in Microbiology. Both programs provide a rigorous and immersive course of study, preparing students to become leaders in research, teaching, and scientific innovation.
Students engage in a rich combination of advanced coursework, hands-on laboratory research, and teaching experience as Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs). In the first year, students explore their research interests through rotations in multiple laboratories, participate in core courses covering foundational topics in their field, and attend seminars that connect them with faculty and peers across the department.
Throughout the program, students gain expertise in cutting-edge techniques, complete milestones such as the qualifying examination, and carry out original dissertation research under the guidance of a faculty committee. They also contribute to the broader scientific community through teaching, presentations, and outreach. Our doctoral program are fully funded for five years wherein students benefit from inclusive, collaborative mentorship in programs consistently ranked among the best in the world. During this time, students work on combining depth of knowledge with opportunities for interdisciplinary research, professional development, and engagement with the vibrant Berkeley community.
We focus on basic research and on the design of biotechnologies. We conduct research programs and teach in many areas of plant biology, including molecular, cellular, genetic, biochemical, physiological, developmental, and structural biology, as well as plant-microbe interactions.
We focus on understanding the microbial world to comprehend the global ecosystem, evolution, and diversity of life. We pursue fundamental and applied research in the areas of microbial physiology and biochemistry, microbial development and genetics, microbial ecology and evolution, and host-microbe interactions. In addition, we manage the Graduate Group in Microbiology at UC Berkeley, a network of campus microbiologists.
