This workshop aims to bring together researchers from various subfields of nuclear and particle physics, including lattice QCD, amplitude/phenomenological analysis, effective field theory, and few-/many-body methods.
The primary goals are to showcase cutting-edge research, explore innovative ideas at the intersection of these disciplines, foster collaboration among experts, and enhance the potential for groundbreaking discoveries.
The topics that will be covered include:
Lattice QCD studies and related formalism,
Scattering theory,
Effective field theories (SMEFT, χPT, ...),
Ab-initio methods for light and medium nuclei,
Phenomelogical/experimental analysis of hadron spectroscopy & low-energy nuclear reactions,
Rare electroweak decays,
Novel techniques for studying strongly-interacting theories.
This workshop is hosted jointly by the Physics Department at UC Berkeley and the Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. The lectures will all take place at the UC Berkeley campus, but the participants may have the opportunity to visit the Lab in a guided tour and for a poster session.
In order to register for the workshop, please go to: registration page
Dealine for registration is June 1, 2025.
The total registration is $150 for a "General Attendee".
IMPORTANT LODGING INFORMATION
We have two recommended lodging options with limited availability (first come, first serve).
Both options are approximately a 25 min walk to our campus workshop meeting location
Berkeley Laboratory Guest House at $139/night all inclusive, book yourself with booking code provided by us
Pro: Least expensive option, possibly great view of the Bay Area
Con: Shuttle services stops a little after 9pm and it is a ~40 min walk uphill from campus. No cafeteria at LBL at this time but the guest house does have a "convenience store" for grab-n-go food options and an onsite microwave.
Hotel Shattuck Plaza at $145/night + taxes ~$166/night all inclusive, book yourself with boooking code provided by us
Pro: In the heart of downtown Berkeley, 1 block from public transportation, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) that links to major airports (SFO and OAK)
Con: more expensive per night (still less than average)
For other housing options, please see our Travel & Housing page
Social activities
As part of the workshop, we will host two social activities.
On July 29, we will host a tour of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) building followed by a poster session. NERSC is located in LBNL, and it is home Perlmutter, one of the largest and faster supercomputers in the world, nameed after Noberl Prize winner Saul Perlmutter. The poster session will include drinks and snacks and plenty of time to interact. The tour will be at 4:30-5:30pm, he poster session will be at 5:30pm - 8pm.
On July 31, we will host a second event in the Lawrence Hall of Science museum. The Lawrence Hall of Science is famous for, among other things, having some of the best views in the Bay Aare. In a clear day, one can clearly see most of the Bay Area, including San Francisco and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. In this event, we will host a panel of scientists venturing into the basic question of whether math is discovered or created. After this engaging discussion, we will host a catered event in the back of the museum where we will be able to enjoy the sunset. Bring a coast, because it can get chilly even in the summer! For more details of this event, got this page.
For both of these events, we will provide shuttles. Although the distances are short (~1-2km), both of these locations are uphill from the Berkeley campus, hence why the view is magnificent!
The shuttles will leave from campus at 4pm both days. Details of the pick up location will be provided at a later date.
In addition to talks on the latest findings in this exciting field, the workshop will feature several discussion sessions to foster the development of new ideas. The final two days will highlight the work and career of Stephen Sharpe, a leader in many efforts closely related to the workshop’s focus.
If you intend to attend only the 2-day celebration for Steve, there is a reduced registration fee of $50. You will need to choose "Thursday and Friday Attendee" under "Registration Type".
This workshop is being co-sponsored by UC Berkeley, LBNL, LANL, ORNL, JST ASPIRE, EMMI, MCSS, ExoHad, NTNP
