About

The manners in which Latin American cities have been imagined vary significantly and present us with a diverse spectrum of ideas, movements, and constructions. Our aim is to examine the complex transdisciplinary processes through which these cities have been constructed and imagined. We will also explore the particular challenges cities face in the current age. The intention is to create an environment in which multiple perspectives come together to deepen our understanding of urban spaces throughout Latin America. Furthermore, we hope that the working group will broaden the dialogue that exists between Latin America and other regions in the Global South.

This website works as a resource and tool to support and expand on activities led by the Latin American Cities Working Group at the University of California, Berkeley, which is supported by UC Berkeley's Global Metropolitan Studies (GMS), Social Science Matrix and Townsend Center for the Humanities. The working group is a space for fostering collaborative discussions on Latin American cities, engaging different research approaches in interdisciplinary meetings. Here, we will post information on future events and meetings, references to materials we plan to use in our discussion sessions, summaries of what was discussed in each gathering, and videos and photos recording the events promoted by this group. This is a platform for the working group to craft particular theoretical and empirical approaches that enable the group to articulate pertinent questions regarding challenges faced by Latin American cities.
