Protecting others from linguistic discrimination through language solidarity

  1. In small groups, discuss the concept of “linguistic discrimination”; then write down your own short description of the term.
  2. Now discuss the concept of “language solidarity” and write down your own short description of the term.
  3. Have you ever been the victim of linguistic discrimination? If so, and you feel comfortable, share answers to the following questions: What happened? When? If not, do you know somebody (personally or otherwise) who has suffered linguistic discrimination? Describe the situation to the members of your group.
  4. What would you do if you were to witness linguistic discrimination in your community? Make a list of three concrete measures that you would exercise in the event of this occurrence.
  5. Each member of the group takes turns to describe points 1-4 to the rest of the class.
