Elementary Judeo Spanish, UC Berkeley (SPAN 109A/JS 102), Spring 2026
UC Berkeley began offering this course in Spring 2024 thanks to the efforts of Adam Mahler, and I'm thrilled to carry the torch. This 4-credit course is a unique blend of Ladino language instruction with literary and cultural studies, with 18 undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds currently enrolled. One class a week is dedicated to language-learning, focused on speaking and listening skills; one class a week is dedicated to discussion of readings that trace the cultural history of Sephardim and their language from the 14th century in pre-Expulsion Iberia to the 21st century. The class also integrates at-home language nesting in Ladino via my Ladino en Kaza project as a supplement to classroom learning.
This course is open to students enrolled at UC Berkeley, and enrollment is closed for Spring 2026. This class will likely be offered again in Spring 2027.
Ladino 1, New Lehrhaus, Feb-March 2026
This is the first Ladino class in New Lehrhaus history, and I developed its bespoke curriculum. This once-weekly, six-session evening course for adult beginner learners of Ladino is focused on speaking and listening (Turkish dialects) and infused with culture and music. The class also integrates at-home language nesting in Ladino via my Ladino en Kaza project as a supplement to classroom learning. It is offered as a virtual class on Zoom.
This course is open to anyone and costs $150 (includes a nesting kit mailed to your house). Check back here or on the New Lehrhaus website for future iterations of this class.
Below, I include some of the pedagogical resources I have developed for Ladino learning, which I encourage others to adapt and use. Note that most of these resources use Turkish dialects of Ladino (Istanbul and Izmir varieties). When possible, I make note of variation and where different variants come from. Since the content of Ladino en Kaza is based on fieldwork recordings I made with speakers, the names of individual contributors and their regions/dialects of origin are indicated for every activity in the project.

Ladino en Kaza is a complete guide for helping you (and/or your students) incorporate Ladino into their daily lives at home by creating a "language nest" in one's kitchen and/or bathroom. The website includes text and audio recordings for 30+ daily activities in Ladino, plus commentary an a searchable vocab list. Physical nesting kits can be ordered via this form!
I have developed 20 easy-to-use, beginner-friendly conversation prompts using GoogleDocs for speakers and learners to use in Ladino, accompanied by vocabulary lists and occasional mini-grammar lessons. Dr. Zalmai Zahir inspired and contributed to this resource! To customize these for your own use, make a copy of the desired document (File > Make a copy).
Kualo es? (What is it?) is a fun, simple, image-filled vocabulary game (using GoogleSlides) for team play in Ladino. It was made with beginners in mind, but instructors (and players) can make it more challenging by adding tasks like using the vocabulary words in sentences, or using action-based images to elicit whole sentences instead of just nouns, etc. Instructions can be found in Ladino and English in the slides themselves. To customize it for your own use, make a copy of the slideshow (File > Make a copy).
