All UC Berkeley graduate students are required to maintain health insurance and are automatically enrolled in the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan -- SHIP. Although all other fees are paid to your home school, exchange students are billed for SHIP through your CalCentral account. You can visit this website to view the cost of the insurance plan.
Sponsored by a third-party organization: If you are sponsored by a third-party organization and need an invoice for your organization to pay the SHIP fee, contact Cal Central directly at +1-510-664-9181 or open a case online so they can further assist you regarding your inquiry.
SHIP Waiver
Students may submit a SHIP waiver by demonstrating comparable insurance coverage. Follow the instructions and timeline on the website to submit your waiver request. Keep in mind that the insurance plan must meet the high standards set by the University of California and that students can submit their waiver request only once. If the plan is denied and does not meet the appeal process criteria or an incorrect plan is submitted, students cannot submit another plan for consideration.
In addition, please make sure your plan covers you for the Fall semester, with coverage dates that span at least from August 1 to December 31. If your coverage dates don’t meet this requirement, your waiver request may be denied.
Visiting exchange students must be prepared to pay for SHIP if they cannot opt out of the plan.
