Doing your PhD in CTEG labs
PhD students may be admitted through different programs the host labs belong to across campus, including Integrative Biology (Organismal & Evolutionary Biology focus), Computational Biology, or Molecular and Cell Biology.
No matter which program you come in, you will be welcome into this rich community. See below statements
Community: The CTEG labs are a tight group of labs with weekly activities where we discuss papers (weekly evolution journal clubs), informal talks every Friday (invited outside speakers or internal postdocs and PhD students present to get feedback), we gather in the community space after the seminar for a happy hour with some snacks. Apart from lab desk spaces, we have shared lab space where students and postdocs from different labs can mingle as well as a CTEG common room and kitchen.
Mentoring: CTEG labs are highly collaborative, you can reach out to any CTEG faculty to get feedback on your projects, collaborate across labs and informally or formally rotate in your PhD.
Support: We strive for an equitable and competitive salary-to-living wage and research funds support within CTEG labs for 5 years.
Courses/Classes: PhD studies at Berkeley and CTEG are research-focused. You are expected to take a minimum required of classes determined by your department (typically up to 4 courses during the entire PhD), and co-teaching assist courses (2 courses during the entire PhD) as part of gaining teaching experience during your PhD training. Hence, it is expected that most of your efforts are put to develop a robust and creative thesis research chapters.
