The College of Chemistry Transfer Student Mentorship Program (CoC TSMP) was started by UC Berkeley graduate students in 2020 with the goal of connecting transfer students to peer and graduate student mentors to facilitate their transition to and help them make the most of their time at UC Berkeley. Incoming transfer students are paired with a graduate student sharing their research interests who serves as a personal mentor throughout the fall semester, providing guidance in topics such as finding a research position, career planning, and work-life balance. Students who enroll in Chem 102: Foundations of Discovery Learning for College of Chemistry Transfer Students will also benefit from small group discussions with senior transfer students, graduate students, and faculty about best learning practices, stress management, CoC coursework, research and clubs, careers, and more. Enrollment in Chem 102 is not a requirement for participation in the CoC TSMP but is highly encouraged. Our goal is to connect you to mentors and peers from when you first start at Berkeley!
Who can apply to be part of the program?
This program is open to any incoming transfer student who is part of the College of Chemistry or taking classes in the College of Chemistry.
How do I apply?
Apply here for the Fall 2024 TSMP!
When does the program take place?
Mentor/mentee pairs will meet throughout the fall semester, with an optional meeting in the spring.
Will this program be virtual or in-person?
We are currently planning on holding this program in-person in the fall in accordance with university health guidelines. We will hold one virtual event on applying for undergraduate research positions over the summer (date and time TBA). Mentors and mentees may choose to meet in-person or virtually throughout the semester.
Who is involved in the program?
Paloma Whitworth and Kate Dolph are the current directors for the program. Additional organizers and mentors are current Berkeley College of Chemistry graduate students and senior transfer students.
