The centrifuge tube you used to start the biodiesel synthesis last week contains two distinct layers. Based on the image to the right, record your observations (clarity/cloudiness, color, approximate volume, etc.) in your lab notebook. Once you finish writing down your observations, determine which layer (top or bottom) contains your biodiesel and which layer contains the glycerol byproduct. The glycerol layer will be removed, leaving the biodiesel layer in the centrifuge tube for the next steps.
Hint: Look up the density of methyl linoleate (the major component of your biodiesel) and glycerol in your lab manual. Would the layer with the greater density be on the bottom or the top?
