Part 1: Plate 1 (10:10:1 toluene : Ethyl Acetate : Acetic Acid)

We will now develop our first plate using 10:10:1 toluene : ethyl acetate : acetic acid as our mobile phase.

The developing chamber is in the foreground, and a TLC plate and vials of the various spotting solutions are in the background. A gloved student removes the tin foil lid from the developing chamber and, using tweezers, lowers a TLC plate into the chamber. She replaces the tin foil lid. The video zooms in, and we watch the solvent front travel up the plate at 4x speed. As the solvent travels up the plate, the wet area of the plate appears lighter than the dry area.
