Cameron Institute
Community Engagement Hub
This space is for Cal Athletics student-athletes, teams, and staff who want to contribute to and collaborate with our community!
Cameron Institute
Community Engagement Hub
Student-Athletes have the opportunity to collaborate with and contribute to our larger community through a continuum of community-centered service opportunities.
Volunteer: Exploration and exposure to short and long-term volunteer opportunities through two main initiatives that leverage our unique strengths as a Cal Athletics community.
Engage in Service Learning: Sustained collaboration coupled with critical reflection in partnership with a school or community-based organization.
Develop & Lead a Social Impact Project: Innovative collaborations or programs that leverage student-athlete strengths, and meet a community-defined need.
All community collaborations share three key elements:
Rooted in authentic community partnerships that address a real community-defined need
Focused on access to opportunity
Scoped and structured with the Cal Student-Athlete interests, platform, and schedule in mind
The Cameron Institute supports student-athletes through an asset-based, community-centered process of community engagement that is grounded in critical reflection.
Flagship opportunities are presented below, and students can make an appointment with the Cameron Institute team to explore interests on a deeper level. Reach out to cameroninstitute@berkeley.edu or schedule an appointment to discuss your interests!
We cultivate long-term, sustainable partnerships that strengthen pathways to opportunity and deepen connections between Cal and our surrounding communities. Through a cycle of ongoing, community-centered engagement, we support Cal student-athletes to develop their knowledge, skills, critical perspective, and commitment to service—recognizing their unique platforms to create meaningful, lasting impact in their communities during and beyond graduation.

Learn-Connect-Contribute-Reflect: The Cameron Institute Cycle of Community Centered Engagement
Student-Athletes are guided through a cycle of community-centered collaboration that links reflection with action. Student-athletes learn about their interests, and issues in our community, connect with those closest to the issue, contribute and collaborate based on community-defined needs, and then reflect on learnings, impact, and next-steps for engagement. Through this cycle of inquiry and service,
Step 1: Learn
Reflect on individual interests
Learn about team interests
Learn about your community
Step 2: Connect
Connect with community partners most proximate the issue, with local knowledge
Learn about assets, strengths, and needs/opportunities within the community
Plan a meaningful service engagement
Step 3: Contribute
Engage in service project that meets the community defined-need, leverages student strengths, and interests
One-time or ongoing
Step 4: Reflect
Reflect on learnings: what did you learn about yourself? Each other? The community?
Reflect on opportunities for continued engagement.
