National Park Service Field Stations

UC Merced operates Yosemite Field Station in partnership with Yosemite National Park and as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Established in 2006, the Yosemite Field Station includes six cabins with accommodations for up to 55, as well as office space, a dry lab, and meeting facilities. The mission of the field station is to provide access to research and teaching in the National Parks and adjacent National Forests.

UC Merced operates Sequoia Field Station in partnership with Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park and as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Established in 2006, the Sequoia Field Station is located in the historic Wolverton Ski Area  and includes one cabin and one research facility. The mission of the field station is to provide access to research and teaching in the National Parks and adjacent National Forests.

UC Berkeley operates Point Reyes Field Station in partnership with the National Park Service as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. Point Reyes Field Station provides a public service by facilitating the science and research that enhances wise stewardship of natural and cultural resources, hosting educational opportunities, and engaging in community outreach and public education with San Francisco Bay area youth through partnerships with the Point Reyes National Seashore Association and other entities.

UC Davis operates Lassen Field Station in partnership with Lassen Volcanic National Park as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. The field station links researchers and classes with the vast volcanic landscapes of the Lassen region. The National Park is surrounded by a vast area of National Forest, which also hosts active research and management programs. Lassen Field Station hosts reserved camp sites for academic users, classroom/meeting space by reservation, and waived park entrance fees.

CSU Channel Islands operates the Santa Rosa Island Research Station (SRIRS) in partnership with the National Park Service. SRIRS provides students, faculty, researchers, and the local community with resources, facilities, and opportunities to engage in natural and cultural resource-based research and education. The SRIRS attempts to expand on knowledge of natural and cultural resource patterns and processes by identifying research needs in collaboration with partners at Channel Islands National Park, developing interdisciplinary collaborations, and weaving together the work of the research community.

UCLA operates the La Kretz Field Station in partnership with Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Field Station supports field research activities, provides short and long-term accommodations for researchers including laboratory facilities and space for meetings and small classes. The primary purpose of the Field Station is to support conservation science research in the Santa Monica Mountains and adjacent areas. It also supports education, outreach and administrative activities related to conservation and land management.

UC Riverside operates the Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. The center's mission is to contribute to the understanding and wise management of the Earth and its arid environments by supporting university-level research, teaching, and public service within the Center’s protected lands and throughout the California Deserts. The reserve offers lodging, laboratory space, an herbarium, and a library for visiting researchers.

Seven southern CSU campuses (Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, Pomona, and San Bernardino) operate the California State University Desert Studies Center in partnership with Mojave National Preserve. The Desert Studies Center is a 1200-acre field station established for the better understanding and appreciation of the Mojave Desert. This center provides housing for up to 75 people, as well as meeting rooms, a classroom, laboratory, library, and natural history collections.
